Book Morocco Journeys in the Kingdom of Fez and to the Court of Mulai Hassan

Download or read book Morocco Journeys in the Kingdom of Fez and to the Court of Mulai Hassan written by Maximilien Antoine Cyprien Henri Poisson de La Martinière and published by . This book was released on 1889 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The shallow scratches made in the still almost virgin soil of Morocco by historians and travelers have increased the thirst for any really useful and scientific information regarding that country; for since the time of Leo Africanus a long blank occurs, filled up, indeed, by such writers as Windhus and Leared in the last century, and, in our own time, by the more practical researches of Rohlfs, Tissot and Sir Joseph Hooker; but while these works have all their separate interests, the volume now to hand will occupy in its turn a special page in the history of the northern division of Morocco. It is with reluctance I have acceded to M. de la Martiniere's request to write a few lines of Preface to his book, but my former connections with the country, and the fact of my being able, as far as my own knowledge goes, to testify to the accuracy of his statements, have induced me to make the attempt"--Preface.

Book Historical Dictionary of Morocco

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Morocco written by Aomar Boum and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-06-02 with total page 1003 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A historical reference work on Morocco must take as its subject al-maghrib al-aqsa (the far west) as the Arabic scholars have generally referred to the approximate region of present-day Morocco, roughly the north-west corner of Africa but at times including much of the Iberian peninsula, because the modern nation-state is a relatively recent creation owing much to events in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. External influences on Morocco tend to come across the narrow straits of Gibraltar to the north, from the east along the Mediterranean litoral, or up from the Sahara. In each case, access is constrained by geography and continued control from outside the region has been difficult to manage over the long term. Although many of the dynasties that came to power in Morocco conquered much broader regions, history and topology have so conspired that there is still more coherence to an historical focus on al-maghrib al-aqsa than is the case for most modern nation-states. This third edition of Historical Dictionary of Morocco contains a chronology, an introduction, a glossary, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 600 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Morocco.

  • Author : Chouki El Hamel
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press

  • ISBN : 1139620045
  • Pages : 534 pages

Download or read book Black Morocco written by Chouki El Hamel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-27 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black Morocco: A History of Slavery, Race, and Islam chronicles the experiences, identity and achievements of enslaved black people in Morocco from the sixteenth century to the beginning of the twentieth century. Chouki El Hamel argues that we cannot rely solely on Islamic ideology as the key to explain social relations and particularly the history of black slavery in the Muslim world, for this viewpoint yields an inaccurate historical record of the people, institutions and social practices of slavery in Northwest Africa. El Hamel focuses on black Moroccans' collective experience beginning with their enslavement to serve as the loyal army of the Sultan Isma'il. By the time the Sultan died in 1727, they had become a political force, making and unmaking rulers well into the nineteenth century. The emphasis on the political history of the black army is augmented by a close examination of the continuity of black Moroccan identity through the musical and cultural practices of the Gnawa.

Book Processions and the Construction of Communities in Antiquity

Download or read book Processions and the Construction of Communities in Antiquity written by Elena Muñiz-Grijalvo and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-30 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume elucidates how processions, from antiquity to the present, contribute to creating consensus with regards to both political power and communitarian experiences. Many classical sources often only tangentially allude to processions, focusing instead on other ritual moments, such as sacrifice. This book adopts a comparative approach, bringing together historians of antiquity and later periods as well as social anthropologists working on contemporary societies, analysing both ancient and modern examples of how rituals, symbols, actors, and spectators interact in the construction of communities. The different examples explored in this study illustrate the performative capacity of processions to construct reality: the protagonism of image and movement, the design of cultic itineraries, and the active participation of members of the public. In studying these examples, readers develop an understanding of how power is exercised and perceived, the extent of its legitimacy, and the limits of community in a variety of case studies. Processions and the Construction of Communities in Antiquity is of interest to students and scholars of the classical and early Christian worlds, especially those working on cult, religion, and community formation. The volume also appeals to social anthropologists interested in these issues across a broader chronology.
