Parce que cette question est au coeur d'un noeud impliquant l'Ecriture, l'ecclésiologie, la sacramentaire, la pneumatologie, le droit civil et canonique, l'historiographie et la liturgie, elle constitue une question théologique essentielle pour les catholiques du monde entier. Pour résoudre la question, Hélène Bricout a cherché dans un premier temps à comprendre comment s'était posée la question pendant les périodes médiévale et moderne ; puis, en prenant appui sur la théologie de la liturgie, à ressaisir la question dans son site originel, à savoir la célébration liturgique. Elle revisite de ce fait la théologie du mariage et situe dans cette théologie la place respective des époux et du ministre ordonné dans la constitution du sacrement de mariage. Un livre libérateur au regard de nombreux débats artificiels.
