Book The Multilingual Experience in Egypt from the Ptolemies to the Abbasids

Download or read book The Multilingual Experience in Egypt from the Ptolemies to the Abbasids written by Arietta Papaconstantinou and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-14 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over a millennium and a half, Egypt was home to at least two commonly used languages of communication. Although this situation is by no means exceptional in the ancient and medieval worlds, the wealth of documentary sources preserved by Egypt's papyri makes the country a privileged observation ground for the study of ancient multilingualism. One of the greatest contributions of papyri to this subject is that they capture more linguistic registers than other ancient and medieval sources, since they range from very private documents not meant by their author to be read by future generations, to official documents produced by the administration, which are preserved in their original form. This collection of essays aims to make this wealth better known, as well as to give a diachronic view of multilingual practices in Egypt from the arrival of the Greeks as a political force in the country with Alexander the Great, to the beginnings of Abbasid rule when Greek, and slowly also Coptic, receded from the documentary record. The first section of the book gives an overview of the documentary sources for this subject, which for ancient history standards are very rich and as yet under-exploited. The second part contains several case studies from different periods that deal with language use in contexts of varying breadth and scope, from its the ritual use in magic or the liturgy to private letters and state administration.

Book Canonisation as Innovation

Download or read book Canonisation as Innovation written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-09-19 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canonisation is fundamental to the sustainability of cultures. This volume is meant as a (theoretical) exploration of the process, taking Eurasian societies from roughly the first millennium BCE (Babylonian, Assyrian, Persian, Greek, Egyptian, Jewish and Roman) as case studies. It focuses on canonisation as a form of cultural formation, asking why and how canonisation works in this particular way and explaining the importance of the first millennium BCE for these question and vice versa. As a result of this focus, notions like anchoring, cultural memory, embedding and innovation play an important role throughout the book.

Book 4QInstruction sagesse et eschatologie

Download or read book 4QInstruction sagesse et eschatologie written by Jean-Sébastien Rey and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-01-31 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume consists of an edition, a translation and a commentary of the most important fragments of 4QInstruction. Initially it deals with the linguistic characteristics of the scroll highlighting the links between 4QInstruction and Ben Sira, and also with the Community Rule and the Hodayot. It then investigates the Sapiential fragments dealing with poverty, husband-wife and parent-child relationships. Finally it examines the eschatological fragments. The work seeks to improve the edition and understanding of this fundamental text enhancing our knowledge of the history and development of thinking at Qumran. Moreover, it examines links which 4QInstruction establishes between purely Sapiential discourse and descriptions of eschatological judgement. This study substantially illuminates our understanding of the Wisdom movement in the early intertestamental period.

  • Publisher : BRILL
  • Release : 2010-09-24
  • ISBN : 9004180990
  • Pages : 572 pages

Download or read book The Gospel of Peter written by Paul Foster and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-09-24 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its discovery in 1886/87 there has been no full-scale English-language treatment of the Gospel of Peter. This book rectifies that gap in scholarship by discussing a range of introductory issues and debates in contemporary scholarship, providing a new critical edition of the text and a comprehensive commentary. New arguments are brought forward for the dependence of the Gospel of Peter upon the synoptic gospels. The theological perspectives of the text are seen as reflecting second-century popular Christian thought. This passion account is viewed as a highly significant window into the way later generations of Christians received and rewrote traditions concerning Jesus.

Book Emery Bigot

Download or read book Emery Bigot written by Leonard E. Doucette and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1970-12-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emery Bigot's life spans the most brilliant years of seventeenth-century France. He left some six hundred letters addressed to the four corners of literary Europe; among his correspondents, acquaintances, and friends were men of the stature of Jean Chapelain, Nicolaus Heinsius, Charles du Cange, Richard Simon, John Milton, and Gilles Ménage. He travelled widely and was for some forty years at the very centre pf a firmly established, smoothly functioning network of mutual assistance and scholarly information that linked the countries of western Europe. From Uppsala to Venice, from Vienna to Oxford, Leiden, London: a network which quite naturally considered Paris its centre, and whose members represented every interest, very segment of intellectual society. Bigot was also the creator of what was perhaps the most important private library of his era. Yet today he is almost unknown, and his correspondence, scattered widely, has not been examined thoroughly since his death. This detailed biography and critical study is based on Bigot's letters and on other unpublished materials in France, Italy, Holland, Denmark, and England. Although much effort has been directed towards research on the more prominent contemporaries of Bigot, he himself – better known to the scholars of his period than a Racine, a La Fontaine, or a Molière – has gone unappreciated. Professor Doucette's book shows that Bigot represents an essential and seriously neglected side of French and European humanistic studies in the seventeenth century. Bigot's role as an outstanding classical scholar and bibliographic expert, his publications and projects for publications, his correspondence, and what is perhaps the most important facet of his activity, his collaboration with other authors in seventeenth-century Europe, all receive full and intensive coverage. This book holds special interest for scholars in several disciplines, especially historians of French literature and civilization, classicists, philologists, bibliophiles and bibliographers, and historians of religion.

The 21 contributions in this volume deal with historical, philological, and methodological issues in the relationship between bilingualism (or diglossia) and grammatical terminology in Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Seven papers deal with philological and methodological topics linked with the constitution, development, transformation and disfigurement of grammatical terminology, and with phenomena of terminological transfer and remodelling. The eight case-studies that follow deal with the functioning of grammatical terminology in a bilingual context, and with the evolution of Greco-Latin terminology concerning phonetics and prosody. Three other papers deal with the reception and adaptation of Greek and Latin grammatical terminology in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The volume is rounded off with indices of names, of Greek and Latin terms, and of concepts. - Contributions are in English, French, Italian, and Spanish.
