Book Sorcery Totem and Jihad in African Philosophy

Download or read book Sorcery Totem and Jihad in African Philosophy written by Christopher Wise and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-03-23 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this significant new work in African Philosophy, Christopher Wise explores deconstruction's historical indebtedness to Egypto-African civilization and its relevance in Islamicate Africa today. He does so by comparing deconstructive and African thought on the spoken utterance, nothingness, conjuration, the oath or vow, occult sorcery, blood election, violence, circumcision, totemic inscription practices, animal metamorphosis and sacrifice, the Abrahamic, fratricide, and jihad. Situated against the backdrop of the Ansar Dine's recent jihad in Northern Mali, Sorcery, Totem and Jihad in African Philosophy examines the root causes of the conflict and offers insight into the Sahel's ancient, complex, and vibrant civilization. This book also demonstrates the relevance of deconstructive thought in the African setting, especially the writing of the Franco-Algerian philosopher Jacques Derrida.

Book Historical Dictionary of Burkina Faso

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Burkina Faso written by Lawrence Rupley and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Burkina Faso, known as Upper Volta until its independence from France in 1960, and locally called the "land of the upright people," is a medium-sized land-locked country with no less than six neighbors, some of which periodically get into trouble... which makes it reasonably strategic in some ways. While it has not done as poorly as some other African states, its economic has certainly not prospered and many Burkinabe go abroad to earn a living. As for politics, it is another case of stability without democracy, even if there are periodic elections. Still, this is better than not even having stability. This third edition of Historical Dictionary of Burkina Faso covers its history through a chronology, an introductory essay, maps, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 1000 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Burkina Faso.

Book Writing through the Visual and Virtual

Download or read book Writing through the Visual and Virtual written by Renée Larrier and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2015-11-12 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing Through the Visual and Virtual: Inscribing Language, Literature, and Culture in Francophone Africa and the Caribbean interrogates conventional notions of writing. The contributors—whose disciplines include anthropology, art history, education, film, history, linguistics, literature, performance studies, philosophy, sociology, translation, and visual arts—examine the complex interplay between language/literature/arts and the visual and virtual domains of expressive culture. The twenty-five essays explore various patterns of writing practices arising from contemporary and historical forces that have impacted the literatures and cultures of Benin, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, Guadeloupe, Haiti, Martinique, Morocco, Niger, Reunion Island, and Senegal. Special attention is paid to how scripts, though appearing to be merely decorative in function, are often used by artists and performers in the production of material and non-material culture to tell “stories” of great significance, co-mingling words and images in a way that leads to a creative synthesis that links the local and the global, the “classical” and the “popular” in new ways

Book Oralit africaine et cr ation

Download or read book Oralit africaine et cr ation written by Anne-Marie Dauphin-Tinturier and published by KARTHALA Editions. This book was released on 2005 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
