Download or read book The Joker written by Harry Eiss and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-05-11 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To prepare for the role of the Joker, Heath Ledger locked himself in a London hotel room, trying to understand and become a character he saw as “an absolute sociopath, a cold-blooded, mass-murdering clown” who was not intimidated by anything and found all of life “a big joke.” In the end, Ledger’s obsession with his role contributed to his own death from drugs before The Dark Knight was released. The connections and irony are too close to ignore. The movie gives the world a curious twist on the roles of Batman and the Joker. It’s politically incorrect, and yet emotionally the Joker’s insanity becomes more endearing than Batman’s noble sacrifice. What is it? Why does this psychopath seem to have a sense of higher truths in his insanity? This is the role of the Joker or the Fool, a standard character in theatre, and a role consciously adopted by serious artists since the late 1800s. Just as Shakespeare’s Fool in King Lear used his riddles and puns and satire to reveal the truths the royal leaders of his world could not or refused to see, today’s artists are both revealing the darkness within the culture and offering a way out. Waiting for Godot has been proclaimed the greatest play of the twentieth century. But there are no great roles in it, no characters representing the equivalent of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Rather, the two main characters are closer to T. S. Eliot’s J. Alfred Prufrock, who says he cannot be a Hamlet, only, perhaps, Hamlet’s Fool. This book explores what has happened as Europe’s culture fragmented and the world lost its center. It explores a range of different arenas, from political and social and religious happenings to scientific and artistic expressions, in order to find the centers of the human condition and how the dark expressions of meaninglessness so commonly highlighted are more rites-of-passage than the final destination.

Book The Anglicization of European Lexis

Download or read book The Anglicization of European Lexis written by Cristiano Furiassi and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2012-08-22 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the lexical influence of English on European languages, a topical theme with linguistic and cultural implications. It provides an extensive introductory background to a cross-national view of English-induced lexical borrowing, posing crucial analytical questions such as what counts as an Anglicism. It also offers a typology of borrowings with examples from the languages represented: Armenian, Danish, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Serbian, Spanish, and Swedish. The articles in this volume address general and language-specific issues related to the analysis and collection of Anglicisms, extending the scope to the largely unexplored area of phraseology and bringing new insights into corpus-based and corpus-driven methodologies. This volume fits into a well-established and constantly developing research field and will appeal to scholars interested in the spread of English as an international language, contact and contrastive linguistics, lexicology and lexicography, and computer corpus lexicography.

Download or read book The Climate written by Pearl Jr and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2001 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here´s a fascinating new book which answers the question not many have asked, "Where did racism come from and why, the heck, is it still here?" Pearl Jr. asked this question to herself 30 years ago and has utilized her lifetime to seek the answers. She says, "this is a book of original thought based solely and purely on facts that are supported by the scholarly community. The evolution of the races, an analysis of racial origins and habitats, correlated with the development of different psyches marks this book as a first of its kind that proves a theory that just makes sense. Although race-relations is very complicated, Pearl Jr.´s writing style is conversational and easy-to-read. The Climate: A Perspective Unvisited examines the complexities of the world according to race. Pearl Jr. chronologically details the stimulus that has created the world´s varied racial populations, differences in skin, eye and hair color(texture), as well as gives the reason for the distinguishable eye shape of people from (mainly) Southeast Asia. At a recent lecture, Pearl Jr. asked, "Am I the only person who wanted to know these answers?" The audience stood attentively silent waiting to hear more. This manual is intended to create a new movement that states, "The final phase of equality is within our mind." The era of slavery and the days of Jim Crow are legally abolished but what about mindsets that continue a belief system of inferiority and superiority based on race? "We´re all human beings and there should´ve never been racism. . . racism will go down in history as one of the most disastrous mistakes of mankind" comments, speaker/author/activist, Pearl Jr.. "The story of race is so repugnant that only a truly mature person can handle the truth"--therefore, Pearl Jr. was extremely conscientious about attitudes and wrote this manual with a solidly loving, sympathetic and many times, empathetic tone. She also states, "the descendants of the oppressor need not feel responsible because the atrocities that racism created are not the fault of anyone living today." The Climate: A Perspective Unvisited has already sparked much discussion and Pearl Jr. is well on her way to becoming an important leader and voice of reason in the struggle to abolish racism in every form. This is a book for all races; its main theme is education through explanation, because according to Pearl Jr, "We all need to know the truth!" Since its first quarter 2002 release, The Climate: A Perspective Unvisited is already in its second printing. Book European Television Crime Drama and Beyond

Download or read book European Television Crime Drama and Beyond written by Kim Toft Hansen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-05 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to focus on the role of European television crime drama on the international market. As a genre, the television crime drama has enjoyed a long and successful career, routinely serving as a prism from which to observe the local, national and even transnational issues that are prevalent in society. This extensive volume explores a wide range of countries, from the US to European countries such as Spain, Italy, the Scandinavian countries, Germany, England and Wales, in order to reveal the very currencies that are at work in the global production and circulation of the TV crime drama. The chapters, all written by leading television and crime fiction scholars, provide readings of crime dramas such as the Swedish-Danish The Bridge, the Welsh Hinterland, the Spanish Under Suspicion, the Italian Gomorrah, the German Tatort and the Turkish Cinayet. By examining both European texts and the ‘European-ness’ of various international dramas, this book ultimately demonstrates that transnationalism is at the very core of TV crime drama in Europe and beyond.

Book Worlds Apart A Postcolonial Reading of post 1945 East Central European Culture

Download or read book Worlds Apart A Postcolonial Reading of post 1945 East Central European Culture written by Cristina Sandru and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01-16 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores the relation of the Eastern European problematic to postcolonial critical practice, interrogating the extent to which postcolonialism can help illuminate instances of imperial domination in non-Third World contexts. It argues that colonisation is to be understood principally as a condition of ideological domination that has engendered similar forms of literary and cultural resistance; consequently, it offers a comparative framework which enables a reading in differential contexts of texts that ostensibly have little in common, but which, on close examination, reveal a shared imaginative space, rhetoric and narrative agency. The book consists of two interrelated parts. Part one is a critical discussion of the ideologies, cultural imaginaries and representational practices articulated in a diverse range of representative postcolonial and post-1945 East-Central European texts; these are shown to share, despite dissimilar conditions of production, uncannily related narrative modes and thematic emphases. Part two is a comparative literature case-study which discusses two authors whose work is both highly representative of the cultural formations discussed in the first part (Milan Kundera and Salman Rushdie) and, at the same time, highly controversial. The chapters dedicated to Kundera’s and Rushdie’s work examine the cultural geography of their novels, particularly in the writers’ use of memory and story-telling to reconfigure history and personal identity in conditions of literal and metaphorical displacement. While their novels thrive on ironic subversion and ambiguity, they simultaneously gesture towards a redemptive space of the imagination, transcending the constraints of both locality and history.

Book Anglicisms in Europe

Download or read book Anglicisms in Europe written by Roswitha Fischer and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-09-13 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume deals with the influence of the English lexis on other European languages in various fields of discourse, social attitudes towards this phenomenon and its reflections in recent lexicographical work. It contains some of the papers read at the conference Anglicisms in Europe 2006, which took place at the University of Regensburg, Germany. It links linguistic aspects with psychological, social, political and cultural issues, tracing relationships and differences between the respective research interests and findings. Its aim is to put the influx of anglicisms into languages other than English into a wide perspective encompassing the European heterogeneity of cultures, traditions and developments. The volume is divided into four parts, which reflect the particular foci of interest in the recent research on anglicisms in the languages of Europe: I. 'Cognitive and Semantic Approaches to Anglicisms', comprising articles that deal with the cognitive, communicative and semantic motivation for contact-induced innovation; II. 'Attitudes Towards the Influx of Anglicisms', with contributions about various national attitudes towards anglicisms and their reflection in the respective languages; III. 'The Use of Anglicisms in Specialized Discourse', with articles focussing on particular practices and domains such as business, sports, the sciences, and on language varieties used in communication within particular subcultures; and IV. 'Anglicisms in Dictionaries', comprising articles that deal with the existing dictionaries of anglicisms in European languages and provide a future-oriented perspective by making suggestions and recommendations regarding future lexicographic works.

Book Britain and the Revolutions in Eastern Europe 1989

Download or read book Britain and the Revolutions in Eastern Europe 1989 written by Richard Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-16 with total page 655 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume documents the UK Government’s response to the unfolding social and political changes in Eastern Europe during 1989. The year 1989 saw momentous change in Europe. It was the year in which Communist rule in Eastern Europe finally ended: with mass demonstrations, an end to one-Party rule, free elections and the opening of borders. In Poland, the independent trade union Solidarity went from being an illegal organisation to running the country. Vaclav Havel went from being a jailed dissident to President of Czechoslovakia. In October 1989, the German Democratic Republic marked the 40th anniversary of the Socialist state, only to see that state collapse a month later following the opening of the Berlin Wall. In December, the Romanian leader Nicolae Ceauşescu saw his near quarter century rule brought to an end in a matter of days. This volume charts the events of an historic year in Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, the GDR, Hungary, Poland and Romania, and looks at British policy towards the Baltic States. It contains reporting from British embassies on the rapidly changing political scene, and documents attempts by the British Government to develop policy against the backdrop of unfolding revolution. This book will be of interest to students of British politics, Eastern European politics, and International Relations.

Book Post Socialist Political Graffiti in the Balkans and Central Europe

Download or read book Post Socialist Political Graffiti in the Balkans and Central Europe written by Mitja Velikonja and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-30 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This theoretically and empirically grounded book uses case studies of political graffiti in the post-socialist Balkans and Central Europe to explore the use of graffiti as a subversive political media. Despite the increasing global digitisation, graffiti remains widespread and popular, providing with a few words or images a vivid visual indication of cultural conditions, social dynamics and power structures in a society, and provoking a variety of reactions. Using qualitative and quantitative methods, as well as detailed interdisciplinary analyses of "patriotic," extreme-right, soccer-fan, nostalgic, and chauvinist graffiti and street art, it looks at why and by whom graffiti is used as political media and to/against whom it is directed. The book theorises discussions of political graffiti and street art to show different methodological approaches from four perspectives: context, author, the work itself, and audience. It will be of interest to the growing body of literature focussing on (sub)cultural studies in the contemporary Balkans, transitology, visual cultural studies, art theory, anthropology, sociology, and studies of radical politics.

Book Party Politics in Central and Eastern Europe

Download or read book Party Politics in Central and Eastern Europe written by Tim Haughton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What impact has EU membership had on party politics in Central and Eastern Europe? Although there is an emerging body of literature on the Europeanization of political parties, most of these accounts focus exclusively on Western Europe. Drawing on a range of qualitative and quantitative approaches including detailed studies of party programmes and manifestos, analysis of the media, semi-structured interviews and expert surveys, this collection provides not just conceptually informed, but also empirically rooted analyses of party politics in Central and Eastern Europe during the first four years of EU membership. In particular, the contributions assess the impact of EU membership on parties’ internal balance of power, the use of European issues in inter-party competition, the role of transnational party federations and the broader role the EU plays in party politics. The findings not only shed light on the impact of EU membership on party organization and programmes, they also inform broader debates concerning the dynamics, fluidity and motors of party politics in Central and Eastern Europe. This book was based on a special issue of Journal of Communist Studies and Transition Politics.
