They are known by women, men, and children, by workers, artists, and poets, by those who cry out and those who are silent, by those who weep, who mourn and those who make them. Book Details:
  • Author : Muntadas
  • Publisher : ACTAR Publishers
  • Release : 2011
  • ISBN : 8492861894
  • Pages : 308 pages

Download or read book Between written by Muntadas and published by ACTAR Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antoni Muntadas (*Barcelona, 1942) is one of the most important contemporary Spanish artists. His work addresses social, political and communications issues, the relationship between public and private space within social framework, and investigates channels of information and the ways they are used to promulgate ideas and control and censor information. Working in different media, such as photography, video, publications, Internet and multi-media installations, Muntadas often speaks about the condition of being "in between" as a point of departure for his work. This "between" can be characterized as a place of ambiguity outside specific sites or destinations. This two-volume publication is the catalogue of the retrospective exhibition that will be held at the Museo Nacional de Arte Reina Sofi?a in Madrid in October 2011. The catalogue uses the same organizing principle as the Muntadas' exhibition that considers his oeuvre from the perspective of "constellations of space," with titles such as Micro Spaces, Power Spheres, The Construction of Fear or Translation Spaces. Each constellation is a comprehensive thematic unit of images, artist's writings as well as new and old texts by notable contributors from the field of contemporary art and theory. The second volume will contain a conversation between the director of the Museo Nacional de Arte Reina Sofi?a, Manuel Borja-Villel, and Muntadas, plus documentary material from the installation at the Museum.

Book Dorothea Lange

Book excerpt: "Dorothea Lange was one of the most important and influential photographers of the twentieth century. A pioneering social documentarian, she was a prominent advocate of the power of photography to effect change, using her camera as a political tool to explose what she saw as society's cruel injustices and inequalities. Featuring over two hundred images, this publication brings together the most signficant bodies of work she created throughout her life, from early portraiture and social realist work made during the Great Depression in the 1930s, to photographs of the internment of Japanese American citizens during the Second World War and the changing physical and social landscape of her beloved West Coast in the 1940s and '50s. With newly commissioned essays by David Campany, Drew Heath Johnson and Abigail Solomon-Godeau, as well as an extensive illustrated chronology and rare archival material, much of which is reproduced for the first time, this book provides a comprehensive overview of Lange's life and work

Download or read book Lorna Simpson written by Joan Simon and published by Companyédition FEP/Jeu de paume/Delmonico Prestel. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive catalogue of Lorna Simpson's critically acclaimed 30-year body of work highlights her photo-text pieces as well as film and video installations to reveal how the artist explores identity, memory, gender, history, fantasy, and reality. Lorna Simpson is a conceptual artist who uses her camera and words to construct new worlds and deconstruct the worlds we know. This monograph opens with her earliest documentary photographs shot between 1978 and 1980, many never before exhibited, and includes her most recent works: large-scale serigraphs on felt and a work-in-progress video installation, Chess, in which Simpson herself, in a rare appearance in her work, recreates images discovered in an anonymous archival photo album. The book also features the photo-text pieces of the mid-1980s that first brought Simpson critical attention; stills from moving picture installations such as Interior/Exterior, Call Waiting, The Institute, and Momentum; and drawings related to her film and video work. Throughout the volume, Simpson's questioning of memory and representation is evident, whether in her moving juxtaposition of text and image, in her pairings of staged self-images with their sources in found photographs, or in her haunting video projection Cloudscape and its echo in the felt work Cloud.

Book Mediations

Download or read book Mediations written by Susan Meiselas and published by Damiani Limited. This book was released on 2018 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exhaustive monograph of Susan Meiselas will be released in occasion of the retrospective that will take place at Tàpies Foundation in Barcelone, Jeu de Paume in Paris and SFMOMA in San Francisco. Mediations is published by Damiani/Jeu de Paume/Fondation Tàpies. This exhibition and monograph propose a selection of works from the 1970s to today which reveal the particular approach of Susan Meiselas toward to the underlying reasons for making photographs, how the image concerns it's subject as much as the photographer and the role that these images can have at different levels in society and particularly in photojournalism. She questions the relationship between the image and the subject in such a way as to include the people portrayed in the image in the process of the making. There is nothing systematic in her approach: each work expresses in a very strong manner that context is vital to the understanding of photography. Therefore her work is specific to the persons portrayed, to the notion of community to which they belong and to the locality of the geographic and political territories that the artist addresses. The way of the showing the work is equally a part of the thought process. How does the spectator behold the artwork? It is often comprised of many parts, made in different media: each "layer" is used to document a level of meaning. For Meiselas one should be able to grasp why the image was taken. Both the subject of the image and the context in which the images are shown are taken into account in the elaboration of each project.
