Download or read book Obeah and Other Martinican Stories written by Marie-Magdeleine Carbet and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2017-04-01 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises French versions and English translations of seven short stories written by Marie-Magdeleine Carbet, Martinique’s most prolific woman writer. Four of these stories are previously unpublished, culled from documents obtained from Carbet’s niece. While analyses of the literature of the French Caribbean have tended to portray these people typically as suffering from pathologies of colonial oppression, the situations and reflections presented in these stories offer different perspectives on the lives and concerns of ordinary Martinicans and thus provide insight into some of the missing links of the sociocultural scene. This unique, multifaceted text fills an important pedagogical and scholarly need, and allows the reader to access the daily lives of French Caribbeans in a significantly authentic way.

Download or read book Religion Children s Literature and Modernity in Western Europe 1750 2000 written by Jan de Maeyer and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book some 25 scholars focus on the relationship between religion, children's literature and modernity in Western Europe since the Enlightenment (c. 1750). They examine various aspects of the phenomenon of children's literature, such as types of texts, age of readers, position of authors, design and illustration. The role of religion in giving meaning both in a substantive sense as well as through the institutionalised churches is studied from an interdenominational point of view (Judaism, Roman Catholicism, Protestantism and Anglicanism). Finally, the contribution of pedagogy and child psychology in the interaction between modernity, religion and children's literature is also discussed.Various articles give a broad overview of the tensions between aesthetics and ethics and the demand for cultural autonomy in the development of children's literature. Children's bibles and missionary stories played an important part in the growing diversification of children's literature, as did the publication of illustrated reviews for children. Remarkable differences are highlighted in the involvement of religious societies and institutions, episcopally approved publishing houses and supervisory bodies in the publication, distribution and supervision of children's literature. This volume adopts a comparative approach in exploring the underlying religious, ideological and cultural dimensions of children's literature in modern society.)
Download or read book Le grand bonheur The Great Happiness written by Nicolas Diat and published by Our Sunday Visitor. This book was released on 2024-09-09 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enter a timeless world, a forbidden city, an ideal society. For a year, we will follow the Benedictines of Fontgombault Abbey in France, from the farm to the refectory, from art workshops to the classrooms, from the infirmary to the hotel, from the printing press to the library, from the church to the cloister, from the sacristy to the scriptorium. This book is an invitation to joy, an invitation to discover the little-known daily lives of monks to help us understand the peace that dwells within them. Their confined existence, which one might imagine to be monotonous, is in reality extraordinarily rich. Transported to Fontgombault by the evocative and delicate writings of author Nicolas Diat, we will no longer be quite the same when we close this book, and exit the doors of the abbey.

Download or read book African Dress written by Karen Tranberg Hansen and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-08-29 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dress and fashion practices in Africa and the diaspora are dynamic and diverse, whether on the street or on the fashion runway. Focusing on the dressed body as a performance site, African Dress explores how ideas and practices of dress contest or legitimize existing power structures through expressions of individual identity and the cultural and political order. Drawing on innovative, interdisciplinary research by established and up and coming scholars, the book examines real life projects and social transformations that are deeply political, revolving around individual and public goals of dignity, respect, status, and morality. With its remarkable scope, this book will attract students and scholars of fashion and dress, material culture and consumption, performance studies, and art history in relation to Africa and on a global scale.

Book excerpt: Black Paris documents the struggles and successes of three generations of African writers as they strive to establish their artistic, literary, and cultural identities in France.
