Book Reconstructions of Canadian Identity

Download or read book Reconstructions of Canadian Identity written by Vander Tavares and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 2024-04-19 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Re-envisioning multiculturalism in Canada In 1971, Canada became the first nation in the world to officially declare its bilingual and multicultural policies. Reconstructions of Canadian Identity examines what has changed over the past fifty years, highlighting the lived experiences of marginalized Canadians and offering insights into the critical work that lies ahead. Editors Vander Tavares and Maria João Maciel Jorge bring together a wide range of disciplines and perspectives to investigate inclusion and exclusion within the processes, discourses, and practices that forge and frame Canadian identity. Chapters analyze ways current multicultural policies continue to benefit the dominant groups and (further) harm minoritized ones. Exposing the pitfalls of established notions of Canadian identity, this volume moves traditionally othered identities—immigrant, racialized, hybridized, Indigenous, and women—to the forefront. In doing so, it reveals how these identities negotiate and claim legitimacy, arguing for a reconceptualization from the margins that truly fosters diversity and inclusion. Illustrating both the shortcomings of and possibilities for a more inclusive multiculturalism in Canada, Reconstructions of Canadian Identity invites readers to reflect on what it means to be Canadian in the twenty-first century.

Download or read book Le Concept de libert au Canada l poque des R volutions atlantiques 1776 1838 written by Michel Ducharme and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Canadian Cultural Exchange changes culturels au Canada written by Norman Cheadle and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2011-04-07 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in Canadian Cultural Exchange / Échanges culturels au Canada provide a nuanced view of Canadian transcultural experience. Rather than considering Canada as a bicultural dichotomy of colonizer/colonized, this book examines a field of many cultures and the creative interactions among them. This study discusses, from various perspectives, Canadian cultural space as being in process of continual translation of both the other and oneself.

Book The Supreme Court of Canada and its Justices 1875 2000

Download or read book The Supreme Court of Canada and its Justices 1875 2000 written by Supreme Court of Canada and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2000-11-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A commemoration of two significant dates, The Supreme Court of Canada and its Justices is also a colourful portrait and an indispensable reference book. A bilingual co-publication of Dundurn Press and the Supreme Court of Canada, the book contains biographies, with portraits or photographs, of every Justice appointed to the Court since its inception. The Supreme Court of Canada and its Justices also features a preface by Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin and a history of the Court by former Chief Justice Antonio Lamer. A succession list and a selected bibliography are included for researchers. A key section of the book deals with the Court’s distinguished building, which was designed by renowned architect Ernest Cormier. Written by Professor Isabelle Gournay of the University of Maryland and France Vanlaethem of the Universite du Quebec a Montreal, this section is illustrated with Cormier’s own watercolours and drawings, as well as current photographs. The Supreme Court of Canada and its Justices is a fitting commemoration of the Supreme Court’s 125 years and its fiftieth year as the court of last resort in Canada.
