Book Collective Agreements and Individual Contracts of Employment

Download or read book Collective Agreements and Individual Contracts of Employment written by Micha? Sewery?ski and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While it can be said that the use of collective labour agreements has greatly expanded during the last decade, it is hard to deny that their power to protect employees has diminished considerably and continues to weaken. An understanding of the factors that have contributed to this fundamental change in economic and social conditions is of crucial significance if we are to preserve an equitable balance in the employer-employee relationship. The eleven papers reprinted here were originally presented at the 16th Congress of the International Academy of Comparative Law, held in Brisbane in July 2002. Each paper is organized around the following considerations for the particular country in question: factors determining the role of collective agreements; factors determining the regulatory power of collective agreements toward the employment contract; factors limiting the regulatory power of collective agreements; degree of fredom of the parties to shape the employment contract; and future prospects for collective agreements as a means of regulating the employment contract. Underlying issues of decentralization, minimum standards, decreasing unionization, unemployment, and the growing individualization of the employment contract are addressed by all the authors. The countries covered are Australia, Belgium, Canada (Quebec), Greece, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, Poland, South Africa and Switzerland.

Book La Charte La loi 101 et les Qu b cois d expression anglaise The Charter Bill 101 and English Speaking Quebec

Download or read book La Charte La loi 101 et les Qu b cois d expression anglaise The Charter Bill 101 and English Speaking Quebec written by Lorraine O'Donnell and published by Presses de l'Université Laval. This book was released on 2021-06-22T00:00:00-04:00 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: La Charte. The Charter: Bill 101 and English-Speaking Quebec The Charter of the French Language, also called Bill 101, profoundly changed Quebec. The 1977 law made state institutions, certain workplaces, and commercial signs predominantly French. Since the law's adoption, the English-speaking minority has experienced population loss, economic decline, and school closures, but also a growing organizational vitality and increased participation in Francophone Quebec. This book features chapters in English or French by researchers and engaged citizens. They explore the Charter in relation to English-speaking Quebec and within a broad historical, political, legal, and socio-economic context. A complex view of the Quebec law and its communities emerges.

Book Le salaire au travail m nager Chronique d une lutte f ministe internationale 1972 1977

Download or read book Le salaire au travail m nager Chronique d une lutte f ministe internationale 1972 1977 written by Louise Toupin and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first-ever international history of the influential feminist movement Wages for Housework, Louise Toupin draws on extensive archival research and interviews with the movement’s founders and activists from Italy, England, Germany, Switzerland, the United States, and Canada. Featuring previously unpublished conversations with Silvia Federici and Mariarosa Dalla Costa, the book highlights the power and originality of the movement, detailing its theoretical and organizational innovations around the unrecognized labour performed by women. Challenging both classic Marxist theory and the mainstream women’s movement, Wages for Housework organized in the 1970s around the idea that domestic or “reproductive” labour is as crucial for the survival of the capitalist system as more typically male “productive” labour. Its activists demanded the wage as a way of ensuring that housework’s value be recognized, an idea still hotly debated today. Wages for Housework is a major contribution to the history of feminist and anti-capitalist movements and a provocative intervention into contemporary conversations about the changing nature of work and the gendered labour market.

Book excerpt: In the last seventy years, Quebec has changed from a society dominated by the social edicts of the Catholic Church and the economic interests of anglophone business leaders to a more secular culture that frequently elects separatist political parties and has developed the most comprehensive welfare state in North America. In Contemporary Quebec, leading scholars raise provocative questions about the ways in which Quebec has been transformed since the Second World War and offer competing interpretations of the reasons for the province's quiet and radical revolutions.

Download or read book Angels of the Workplace written by Mercedes Steedman and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1997-12-15 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this renowned 1997 study of the clothing industry in Canada, Mercedes Steedman examines how the intricate weaving together of the meanings of class, gender, ethnicity, family, and the workplace created a job ghetto for women. Although women comprised a significant majority of garment workers, their roles were limited both in the workplace and in the trade union bureaucracy. Detailing the disparaties between men and women in terms of wages and representation, Angels of the Workplace is the definitive history of discrimination against women in Canada's clothing industry. Steedman shows the crucial role that women played at the front of the picket lines during labour strikes and reveals how they gained sympathy and favourable media coverage for the workers' cause. Tracing both the new hopes for more equitable work brought about by left-wing unionism, and the disappointments caused by the cooperation of labour and management in the "new unionism" of the 1930s, Angels of the Workplace reveals how formalized workplace gender discrimination was formalized for the rest of the century.

Book Determining Boundaries in a Conflicted World

Download or read book Determining Boundaries in a Conflicted World written by Suzanne N. Lalonde and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2002-12-06 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: She argues that nothing justifies conferring such a binding status on the principle and that the uti possidetis applied in Yugoslavia was an entirely new version that can derive no legitimacy from colonial precedents. While the doctrine may have considerable utility in some cases, it is only principle among many that must be considered if future disputes are to be resolved so as to promote long term peace and stability. Lalonde sounds a cautionary note, showing that the idea that uti possidetis provides a one-size-fits-all, legally incontestable solution to all territorial disputes is an illusion.
