Book French Socialists Before Marx

Download or read book French Socialists Before Marx written by Pamela M. Pilbeam and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2000 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to put socialism into practice was as fundamental a concern for nineteenth-century socialists as it has been for their successors. In French Socialists before Marx Pamela Pilbeam explores the development of and changes in socialist ideas, revealing how the Fourierists of the 1830s and 1840s changed Fourier's ideas on the family and sexuality, preferring public works programs to model communities. She focuses on the practical contributions of early socialists, including the efforts of working women to run schools, worker associations, and newspapers.

Book excerpt: The events of 1989/90 in Europe demonstrated the renewed relevance of the mid-nineteenth century uprisings: both by showing, once again, how a revolutionary initiative could quickly spread through different European countries, but also by calling into question the nature of revolution and the criteria for a revolution's success and failure. To commemorate the 1848 revolution in a spirit of renewed critical inquiry, an international team of prominent historians have come together to produce what must be the most comprehensive work on this topic to date and to offer a synthesis that sums up the current state of scholarly research, emphasizing the many new interpretations that have developed over several decades.

Book L int gration Du Droit International Et Communautaire Dans L ordre Juridique National

Download or read book L int gration Du Droit International Et Communautaire Dans L ordre Juridique National written by Pierre Michel Eisemann and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 1996-06-26 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just how International and European Community Law is being integrated into domestic legal systems is as yet not too well known. To gain a clear overview of this grey area requires more than knowing about the various constitutional rules. What is also needed is a study of little-known administrative practices and the attitudes of the national courts, where case-law is often as complex as it is diverse. When all these elements are taken into account, the general picture that emerges is a much more subtle one, transcending the classical positions based on the theories of monism and dualism. To grasp this reality and go beyond preconceived ideas, it seemed indispensable to make a thorough analysis of national practices. To this end, the International Law Centre of the University of Paris XIII (Cedin Paris XIII) took the initiative, in 1990, of setting up a network of European international lawyers to work on the theme International norms and legal barriers'. This book presents the outcome of the network's programme. The research was organized on the basis of a single questionnaire which provided the outline of a common workplan, to which each of the contributors has adhered. Detailed comparisons of national practices can now be made, relating in particular to international treaties, acts of international organisations and of the European Communities, and to unwritten international law. This is the first time that such a comprehensive and detailed survey has been made of all thirteen countries. Reading the national reports one after the other provides complete information on domestic practices; reading them crosswise gives a direct comparison between the different countries on specificissues.

Book Balzac on the Barricades

Download or read book Balzac on the Barricades written by Rebecca Terese Powers and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2024-08-13 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of nineteenth-century French literature in a distinctively modern political movement When Parisian workers took to the streets in February 1848, they adopted the rallying cry of droit au travail (the right to work). That protesters increasingly framed employment as a political right represented a radical and modern development. But where had this idea originated? In her examination of this cause célèbre of France’s Second Republic, Rebecca Powers shows that the redefinition of labor as a basic right sprang not only from political debates but also directly from contemporary literature. Powers charts the rise of this revolutionary concept through the tales of bourgeois dominance in the novels and newspaper articles of Honoré de Balzac. As Powers explains, this realist semiotician of French provincial and urban life par excellence was the first to attempt a definition of modern labor as an integral part of the emerging modern society. Powers makes clear how recognizing Balzac’s influence on mid-nineteenth-century political discourse is essential to understanding the course of events in that earth-shaking year.
