C'est donc au général corse, devenu un héros national sur les champs de bataille, qu'il revient de l'en sortir : fils de la Révolution, il en incarne la gloire militaire sans avoir à en assumer les excès ; né à la périphérie du royaume, il a assez de proximité avec ses compatriotes pour comprendre les passions révolutionnaires et assez de distance pour ne pas y succomber. Lui seul paraît capable de réconcilier les deux peuples et les deux histoires que la Révolution a séparés. Mais pour comprendre la réussite de son coup d'audace, dont ce livre restitue le cours haletant, c'est le régime du Directoire, ses incuries et son échec, que l'auteur interroge aussi à frais nouveaux. Brumaire est un vrai coup d'État, mais singulier : sans violence ou presque, sans victimes, sans proscrits, entouré d'un consentement tel qu'il sera longtemps considéré comme une élection que les circonstances avaient privée des formes légales. Et même s'il inaugure un régime plutôt éphémère, l'irruption de Bonaparte dans l'histoire révolutionnaire imprimera durablement sa marque sur notre légendaire national et l'esprit de nos institutions.
