C'est à cette époque charnière que trois marchands vénitiens, Nicolo, Mafeo et Marco Polo sillonnent le monde. De 1250 à 1270, les deux aînés visitent Constantinople, la Russie et poussent à travers l'Asie centrale vers la Chine. A partir de 1271, Marco Polo se joint à eux. Ils traversent les hauts plateaux d'Anatolie, l'Iran, le Haut Afghanistan, le Pamir et le Turkestan chinois pour arriver à Pekin. Seize ans de séjour en Chine permettent à Marco Polo de parcourir une partie importante du pays. Le retour les conduira vers d'autres contrées : l'Indochine, Ceylan, les côtes indiennes. Et même des régions jusqu'alors non visitées comme les côtes de l'Arabie, l'Ethiopie et le littoral africain jusqu'à Zanzibar seront fidèlement décrites à travers les témoignages recueillis. Le livre de Marco Polo se présente non seulement comme une géographie complète de son temps mais comme un témoignage unique qui étale aux yeux de l'Europe en crise les incomparables richesses et le degré de civilisation de l'Asie. Marco Polo clôt l'ère des géographes du légendaire pour ouvrir celle des précurseurs des explorateurs et des colonisateurs des temps modernes.

The concept of medieval historiography as "usable past" is here challenged and reassessed. The contributors' shared claim is that the value of medieval historiographical texts lies not only in the factual information the texts contain but also in the methods and styles they use to represent and interpret the past and make it ideologically productive. Violence is used as the key term that best demonstrates the making of historical meaning in the Middle Ages, through the transformation of acts of physical aggression and destruction into a memorable and usable past. The twelve chapters assembled here explore a wide range of texts emanating from throughout the francophone world. They cover a range of genres (chansons de geste, histories, chronicles, travel writing, and lyric poetry), and range from the late eleventh to the fifteenth century.
