Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sagalassos Archaeological Research Project has made interdisciplinary practices part of its scientific strategy from the very beginning. The project is internationally acknowledged for important achievements in this respect. Aspects of its approach to ancient Sagalassos can be considered ground-breaking for the archaeology of Anatolia and the wider fields of classical and Roman archaeology. Now that its first project director, Professor Marc Waelkens - University of Leuven -, is at the stage of shifting practices, from an active academic career to an active academic retirement, this volume represents an excellent opportunity to reflect on the wider impact of the Sagalassos Archaeological Research Project. The contributors to the honorific publication build on the methods and practices of interdisciplinary archaeology from a wide variety of angles, in order to highlight the crucial role of interdisciplinary research for creating progress in the interpretation of the human past or nurture developments in their own disciplines. In particular, the contributors consider how the parcours of the Sagalassos Project helped to pave their ways. Contributors are international authorities in the field of Anatolian and classical archaeology, bio-archaeology, geo-archaeology, history and cultural heritage.

Download or read book Living in a World Heritage Site written by Manon Istasse and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-03 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a thick ethnography of the Fez medina in Morocco, a World Heritage site since 1981, Manon Istasse interrogates how human beings come to define houses as heritage. Istasse interrogates how heritage appears (or not) when inhabitants undertake construction and restoration projects in their homes, furnish and decorate their spaces, talk about their affective and sensual relations with houses, face conflicts in and about their houses, and more. Shedding light on the continuum between houses-as-dwellings and houses-as-heritage, the author establishes heritage as a trajectory: heritage as a quality results from a ‘surplus of attention’ and relates to nostalgia or to a feeling of threat, loss, and disappearance; to values related to purity, materiality, and time; and to actions of preservation and transmission. Living in a World Heritage site provides a grammar of heritage that will allow scholars to question key notions of temporality and nostalgia, the idea of culture, the importance of experts, and moral principles in relation to heritage sites around the globe.

Download or read book Mega events and Urban Image Construction written by Anne-Marie Broudehoux and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-02-17 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this book is the influence of mega-events in the transformation of image construction practices in their host cities. It uses the idea of urban image construction as a lens through which to examine the spectacles of mega-events, with chapters exploring different themes that compose the imagineering process. The physical and social dimensions of these spectacles are addressed, as is the emerging resistance to controversial initiatives. The book explores the unique conditions of mega-event hosting by employing a political-economy point of view and focusing the analytical lenses on Rio de Janeiro and Beijing, two recent Olympic host cities with immense social inequalities.

Download or read book Les cartes de la connaissance written by Jean-Paul Bord and published by KARTHALA Editions. This book was released on 2004 with total page 699 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book Beyond Gated Communities written by Samer Bagaeen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on gated communities is moving away from the hard concept of a 'gated community' to the more fluid one of urban gating. The latter allows communities to be viewed through a new lens of soft boundaries, modern communication and networks of influence. The book, written by an international team of experts, builds on the research of Bagaeen and Uduku’s previous edited publication, Gated Communities (Routledge 2010) and relates recent events to trends in urban research, showing how the discussion has moved from privatised to newly collectivised spaces, which have been the focal point for events such as the Occupy London movement and the Arab Spring. Communities are now more mobilised and connected than ever, and Beyond Gated Communities shows how neighbourhoods can become part of a global network beyond their own gates. With chapters on Australia, Canada, Europe, South America, Asia, Africa and the Middle East, this is a truly international resource for scholars and students of urban studies interested in this dynamic, growing area of research.

Download or read book South Africa and the Global Game written by Peter Alegi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Firmly situating South African teams, players, and associations in the international framework in which they have to compete, South Africa and the Global Game: Football, Apartheid, and Beyond presents an interdisciplinary analysis of how and why South Africa underwent a remarkable transformation from a pariah in world sport to the first African host of a World Cup in 2010. Written by an eminent team of scholars, this special issue and book aims to examine the importance of football in South African society, revealing how the black oppression transformed a colonial game into a force for political, cultural and social liberation. It explores how the hosting of the 2010 World Cup aims to enhance the prestige of the post-apartheid nation, to generate economic growth and stimulate Pan-African pride. Among the themes dealt with are race and racism, class and gender dynamics, social identities, mass media and culture, and globalization. This collection of original and insightful essays will appeal to specialists in African Studies, Cultural Studies, and Sport Studies, as well as to non-specialist readers seeking to inform themselves ahead of the 2010 World Cup. This book was published as a special issue of Soccer and Society.
Download or read book D veloppement territorial durable renforcement des relations intersectorelles written by Council of Europe and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Centre d'études canadiennes de la Sorbonne nouvelle and published by Presses Sorbonne Nouvelle. This book was released on 1997 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
