Book Quality of Life Indicators

Download or read book Quality of Life Indicators written by David H. Sherwood and published by Cmhc. This book was released on 1996 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Community Oriented Model of the Lived Environment (COMLE) was developed to assist municipalities to assess & monitor the quality of life in their community. COMLE provides an approach for applying 40 quality of life indicators and makes a direct link between quality of life and sustainability. This report begins with a discussion of the quality of life and the need for a practical model of indicators to be used in public policy research. It then describes the development of COMLE and its sub-components, and reviews the 1993 pilot test of the model in Quebec, Toronto, and Fort McMurray, with additional commentary from Montreal. Experiences of the participating municipalities are summarized, with their full reports in the appendices. The report makes recommendations for improving the model, discusses its limitations, and states some conditions for its successful use.

Book Sustainable Cities

Download or read book Sustainable Cities written by Richard E. Stren and published by Westview Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of sustainability has become central to international dialogues on development. This study focuses on cities and examines the implications that urbanization has for the future of the environment. The contributors explain how the development of infrastructure and industries poses serious threats to the environment through the pollution of air, water and soil. Many urban governments are actively initiating programs to mitigate harmful environmental impacts, and the discussions show that some forms of urban settlement are more benign than others. To assess whether cities can be sustainable in environmental terms, this book brings together comprehensive studies of the urban experience in nine major countries and regions: the United States, Canada, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Japan, Southeast Asia, China and Hong Kong, Africa, and Latin America. The chapters examine the meaning of sustainable development in a specific region, the growth and structure of urban systems, the effects of possible climatic changes on urban areas, the political environment within which cities operate, and the pressures caused by intense urban use of services and natural resources. Chapters conclude with policy proposals for increasing sustainability.

Book Seminal Studies in Regional and Urban Economics

Download or read book Seminal Studies in Regional and Urban Economics written by Roberta Capello and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-09 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book spans a scientific research program elegantly developed by Roberto Camagni, an eminent regional scientist, who has offered ground-breaking ideas in regional and urban economics throughout his academic career. In addition to bringing together a selection of Professor Camagni’s most influential works, the book presents syntheses and interpretations of his ideas by respected colleagues and by his students. In regional economics, space as territory, which plays an active role in innovation processes and in regional growth patterns; territorial capital as a synthetic concept of differentiated regional growth assets; and sources of regional competitiveness are only a few of the main ideas that emerged in regional economics thanks to this inspiring mind. In urban economics, he paved the way towards a new theoretical interpretation of the existence of the city and of its dynamics. His theory of city networks overcame the limits of Christaller’s and Lösch’s spatial approach to the city, with a solid economic conceptualization of spatial city network structures. All theories are accompanied by sound policy analysis, helping to contribute to the design and implementation of appropriate spatial policies at the European level.

Centre d'études canadiennes de la Sorbonne nouvelle and published by Presses Sorbonne Nouvelle. This book was released on 1997 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
