This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: in 1923/24 Henry Fruges, a Bordeaux industrialist commissioned Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret with a "small workers housing estate" in Lege and a garden city in Pessac, comprising 130 to 150 houses with shops. These two housing schemes fitted neatly into the architects research on standardisation and the "machine a habiter," and provided a useful laboratory for gauging public opinion with regard to mass-production techniques in housing estates. One of the most striking features of the Cite Fruges was the use of polychromy on the exterior facades, to, in Le Corbusier's own words, "sculpt the space through the physical quality of colour - bring forward some volumes while making others recede. In short, compose with colour in the same way as we have composed with form. This is how architecture is transformed into urbanism." Historical documents and drawings make this handy-sized volume an invaluable guide for visitors and a practical introduction for all architectural enthusiasts."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1923/24, Henry Fruges - an industrialist from Bordeaux decided to commission Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret with a "small workers' housing estate" in Lege and a garden city in Pessac, comprising 130 to 150 houses and shops. The construction of these two housing schemes between 1924 and 1926 fitted neatly into the architects' research on the machine a habiter and standardisation. Lege and Pessac thus acted as a laboratory for gauging the public's opinion with regards to applying standardisation and mass-production techniques to housing estates. This quest for a standard plan also induced exploratory study on "a new plan for the city" and it is in this respect that Pessac stands unique among Le Corbusier's oeuvres.

Download or read book UnDoing Buildings written by Sally Stone and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-18 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: UnDoing Buildings: Adaptive Reuse and Cultural Memory discusses one of the greatest challenges for twenty-first-century society: what is to be done with the huge stock of existing buildings that have outlived the function for which they were built? Their worth is well recognised and the importance of retaining them has been long debated, but if they are to be saved, what is to be done with these redundant buildings? This book argues that remodelling is a healthy and environmentally friendly approach. Issues of heritage, conservation, sustainability and smartness are at the forefront of many discussions about architecture today and adaptive reuse offers the opportunity to reinforce the particular character of an area using up-to-date digital and construction techniques for a contemporary population. Issues of collective memory and identity combined with ideas of tradition, history and culture mean that it is possible to retain a sense of continuity with the past as a way of creating the future. UnDoing Buildings: Adaptive Reuse and Cultural Memory has an international perspective and will be of interest to upper level students and professionals working on the fields of Interior Design, Interior Architecture, Architecture, Conservation, Urban Design and Development.

Book The Australian Ugliness

Download or read book The Australian Ugliness written by Robin Boyd and published by Text Publishing. This book was released on 2010-03-29 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty years after its first publication, Robin Boyd's bestselling The Australian Ugliness remains the definitive statement on how we live and think in the environments we create for ourselves. In it Boyd rallied against Australia's promotion of ornament, decorative approach to design and slavish imitation of all things American. 'The basis of the Australian ugliness,' he wrote, 'is an unwillingness to be committed on the level of ideas. In all the arts of living, in the shaping of all her artefacts, as in politics, Australia shuffles about vigorously in the middle - as she estimates the middle - of the road, picking up disconnected ideas wherever she finds them.' Boyd was a fierce critic, and an advocate of good design. He understood the significance of the connection between people and their dwellings, and argued passionately for a national architecture forged from a genuine Australian identity. His concerns are as important now, in an era of suburban sprawl and inner-city redevelopment, as they were half a century ago. Caustic and brilliant, The Australian Ugliness is a masterpiece that enables us to see our surroundings with fresh eyes. This handsome anniversary edition is complemented by Robin Boyd's original sketches for the book and a new afterword by major contemporary architects.
