Book New Public Management

Download or read book New Public Management written by Tom Christensen and published by Ashgate Pub Limited. This book was released on 2001-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text examines the dynamics of comprehensive civil service reform in Norway, Sweden, New Zealand and Australia. Since 1985, new public management (NPM) has evolved into an administrative orthodoxy. This book challenges the globalization thesis, which maintains that NPM is spreading rapidly around the world and generating convergence between civil service systems. The text argues that administrative reforms are transformed by a complex mixture of environmental pressure, policy features, and historical and institutional contexts, which would imply divergence and organizational variance. This book looks at three forms of tranformation of NPM. The first looks at the reform process, ideas, and content. The second looks at the effects of NPM reforms on political-administrative control, organized interests, policy capacity, and governmental culture. The third focuses on the implications of NPM for reform theory and democratic ideas.

Book Orchestrating Local Climate Policy in the European Union

Download or read book Orchestrating Local Climate Policy in the European Union written by Lena Bendlin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-13 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can we sidestep tedious climate policy negotiations and forge a coalition of the willing instead? Many international organizations and scholars hope to spur local climate action by orchestration, indirect and voluntary governance arrangements. Lena Bendlin looks beyond the apparent success of voluntary initiatives using the example of the Covenant of Mayors, often heralded as an exemplary multi-level EU initiative. Five in-depth case studies show why, how, and with what difficulties local governments engage in this voluntary commitment scheme. The analysis identifies durability, intensity, and causality as crucial building blocks for more cautious orchestration theorizing and derives recommendations for appropriate incentives and support at the regional, national, and international level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Mabanckou dazzles with technical dexterity and emotional depth” in his debut novel, winner of the Grand Prix Littéraire de l’Afrique Noire (Publishers Weekly, starred review). This tale of wild adventure reveals the dashed hopes of Africans living between worlds. When Moki returns to his village from France wearing designer clothes and affecting all the manners of a Frenchman, Massala-Massala, who lives the life of a humble peanut farmer after giving up his studies, begins to dream of following in Moki’s footsteps. Together, the two take wing for Paris, where Massala-Massala finds himself a part of an underworld of out-of-work undocumented immigrants. After a botched attempt to sell metro passes purchased with a stolen checkbook, he winds up in jail and is deported. Blue White Red is a novel of postcolonial Africa where young people born into poverty dream of making it big in the cities of their former colonial masters. Alain Mabanckou’s searing commentary on the lives of Africans in France is cut with the parody of African villagers who boast of a son in the country of Digol. Praise for Alain Mabanckou and Blue White Red “Mabanckou counts as one of the most successful voices of young African literature.” —Internationales Literaturfestival Berlin “The African Beckett.” —The Economist “Blue White Red stands at the beginning of the author’s remarkable and multifaceted career as a novelist, essayist and poet . . . this debut novel shows much of his style and substance in remarkable ways . . . Dundy’s translation is excellent.” —Africa Book Club “Mabanckou’s provocative novel probes the many facets of the ‘migration adventure.’” —Booklist

Book Functional Approaches to Culture and Translation

Download or read book Functional Approaches to Culture and Translation written by Dirk Delabastita and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2006-10-31 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a generous selection of articles on translation by Professor José Lambert (K.U. Leuven). It traces the intellectual itinerary of their author, who started out as a French and Comparative Literature scholar some four decades ago trying to get a better grip on the problem of inter-literary contacts, and who soon became a key figure in the emergent discipline of Translation Studies, where he is widely known as an indefatigable promoter of descriptively oriented research. This collection shows how José Lambert has never stopped asking new questions about the crucial but often hidden role of language and translation in the world of today. It includes some of the author’s classic papers as well as a few lesser known ones that deserve wider circulation. The editors’ introduction and the bibliography complete this thought-provoking survey of the career of one of the most creative researchers in the field.

The impact of new technologies and the opportunities afforded by the social web are both discussed. The concluding chapters consider eLearning in relation to cancer care and assess the scope for education to improve prevention. Readers will find this new volume in Springer’s TELe Health series to be a rich source of information on the important contribution that can be made by telemedicine in achieving these goals.

Book Islamic Philosophy and Occidental Phenomenology on the Perennial Issue of Microcosm and Macrocosm

Download or read book Islamic Philosophy and Occidental Phenomenology on the Perennial Issue of Microcosm and Macrocosm written by Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-09-22 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By proposing the Microcosm and Macrocosm analogy for dialogue between Islamic Philosophy and Occidental Phenomenology, the authors of this volume are reviving the perennial positioning of the human condition in the play of forces within and without the human being. This theme has run from Plato through the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Modernity, and has been ignored by contemporaries. It now acquires a new pertinence and striking significance due to the scientific discoveries into the "infinitely small" in life, on the one hand, and the prodigious technological discoveries of the "infinitely great" on the other. Both open up undreamt-of prospects for the continuing conquest of cosmic forces. The human person – thrown into turmoil by the new approaches to life and needing to acquire new habits of mind, having lost security of all beliefs – desperately seeks a new clarification of the Human Condition within the unity of everything-there-is, of cosmic forces, and of his destiny. The dialogue between Islamic Philosophy and phenomenology of life can show the way. Book The Constitution of France

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sophie Boyron
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2012-12-21
  • ISBN : 1782250565
  • Pages : 290 pages

Download or read book The Constitution of France written by Sophie Boyron and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-12-21 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The centrepiece of this work is the French Constitution of 1958, portrayed by the author as an innovative hybrid construct whose arrival brought the constitutional stability that had eluded France for centuries. But the creation of the 1958 Constitution was not an isolated act; it represents part of an evolutionary process which continues to this day. Even though it is codified, the constitution of the Fifth Republic has evolved so markedly that some commentators have dubbed the present institutional balance the 'Sixth Republic'. It is this dynamic of the constitution which this book seeks to explain. At the same time the book shows how the French constitution has not developed in isolation, but reflects to some extent the global movement of ideas, ideas which sometimes challenge the very foundations of the 1958 Constitution.
