Publiés initialement en 1870, ces contes bretons bilingues — chose rarissime chez les folkloristes bretons du XIXe siècle — recueillis à Brest de paysans venant travailler à l’Arsenal, méritaient amplement d’être remis à disposition du public breton et bretonnant, en en conservant leur graphie d’origine. Gabriel Milin (1822-1895), né à Saint-Pol-de-Léon, agent comptable au port de Brest, écrivain, poète, philologue, traducteur d’œuvres classiques en breton. Il fut également maire de l’Île de Batz. Amable-Emmanuel Troude (1803-1885), né à Brest, militaire de carrière (colonel), lexicographe, écrivain et folkloriste. Il travaille en collaboration avec Gabriel Milin sur plusieurs ouvrages de vulgarisation en breton. On lui doit également un Dictionnaire français et celto-breton et un Nouveau dictionnaire pratique breton-français du dialecte de Léon.
