Book Revivalism and Social Christianity

Download or read book Revivalism and Social Christianity written by Christophe Chalamet and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-01-16 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does one become a "Righteous among the Nations"? In the case of Henri Nick (1868-1954) and Andre Trocme (1901-1971), two French Protestant pastors on whom that title was conferred by Yad Vashem (Jerusalem) for their acts of solidarity toward persecuted Jews, the answer seems to be: by being immersed, from an early age, in the discourses and practices of social Christianity. By focusing on the lives of two significant figures of twentieth-century Christianity, this study, the first in English on the Social Gospel in French Protestantism, presents a genealogy of that movement, from its emergence in the last decades of the nineteenth century to its high point, during World War II, in Le Chambon-sur-Lignon, where Trocme and many people of that area of southern France rescued hundreds of Jewish refugees. As social Christians who prayed and worked for the coming of God's kingdom on earth in the midst of a world torn by two world wars, Henri Nick and Andre Trocme combined a deep revivalist faith with a concern for the concrete conditions in which people live. They wished to "save" others, and indeed they realized that intent in ways they did not foresee.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What sort of differentiations and what kind of articulations are there between religious authority, morality, and civil laws? This question takes place at the heart of the contemporary, its debates, its challenges, its aporias. Presented here is a broad historical record, presentations of present situations-concerning Islam, the United States, the Orthodox world, and the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights-and the theological revivals articulated Post-Vatican II. In the background are the motives of the so-called natural law, human rights, and a dialectic of the "two Reigns." The majority of this text is in French, with seven essays in English. Book Russian migr s in the Intellectual and Literary Life of Interwar France

Download or read book Russian migr s in the Intellectual and Literary Life of Interwar France written by Leonid Livak and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a pioneering exploration of the intellectual and literary exchange between Russian émigrés and French intelligentsia in the 1920s and 1930s, Leonid Livak provides an impressively comprehensive bibliographic overview of a veritable "who's who" of Russian intellectuals and literati, listing all the material published by Russian émigrés or on topics pertaining to them during the period under study. Focusing attention on a largely ignored chapter of European cultural history, this volume challenges historical assumptions by demonstrating processes of cultural cross-fertilization and illuminates the precedents Russians set for political exiles in the twentieth century. A remarkable achievement in scholarship, Russian Émigrés in the Intellectual and Literary Life of Inter-War France is a valuable resource for admirers and researchers of French and Russian culture and European intellectual history.

Book Catholic Social Thought

Download or read book Catholic Social Thought written by Jonathan Boswell and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2000 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These essays are an attempt to recover something of the form, style and force of Catholic non-official social thinking in the face of contemporary social thought and contemporary injustice in advanced societies. After an opening essay by the doyen of Catholic writers in this field, Jean-Yves Calvez, SJ, the book is divided into three sections. The first and largest group of essays discuss patterns and predicaments of Catholic social thought in general terms and from different points of view. The context here is partly the debate on modernity, high-modernity and post-modernity, partly the issue of how far and in what ways Catholic Social Thought can claim to be distinctive, relative to contemporary secular thought. The second section of the book focusses on relationships between Catholic social thought and its restatement, and a number of contemporary debates on public issues. Particular attention is given, in successive essays, to issues of anti-poverty, human rights, economic theory and international finance. A third and shorter section describes a number of institutional projects which attempt to carry Catholic social values forward into concrete action, focussing on work in health and welfare, grass roots economic co-operation, anti-poverty and international peace and justice. Final contributions by the reputed international scholar in this field, John Coleman, SJ, and the book editors, respectively evaluate the collection as a whole and discuss further steps.

Book excerpt: This study argues, based on primary sources, in favor of meaning in nonfigural ornament, and thus contributes to a debate central to the study of Islamic art. It also brings new material from the Andalusi poetic corpus in classical Arabic to another of Medieval Studies' central discussions, the "Troubadour Question."
