Le développement des mesures pour évaluer l'état de santé orale est essentiel à l'évolution et à la maturation d'une base de connaissance scientifique en art dentaire gériatrique. En effet, les données de plusieurs études suggèrent que les désordres oraux ont un effet significatif sur le bien-être et la satisfaction de la qualité de vie des individus dans l'étude. Nous nous trouvons donc, à la convergence de 2 phénomènes: l'un culturel, qui s'exprime par le désintérêt vis-à-vis de la santé bucco dentaire, un manque d'information sur les risques liés à une dégradation de l'état buccal et la propagation d'idées erronées sur les coûts et difficultés des traitements; l'autre structurel, qui se traduit par un manque de moyens et de structures adaptées au suivi des personnes âgées hébergées en établissements. Ces deux phénomènes sont en interaction permanente, le manque de moyens n'incitant pas à s'investir et le désintérêt ou la crainte freinant la mise en place de moyens nécessaires à un bon suivi. Les besoins en soins relevés et le manque de suivi incitent les acteurs sanitaires à proposer en plan d'action une communication dirigée tant vers les établissements et leurs personnels que vers les différentes tutelles ou organismes intervenant auprès des établissements et une communication vers les professionnels de santé.
