Toutefois, plusieurs se questionnent sur les altérations possibles à la qualité de l'air ambiant pour les habitations équipées d'appareils de combustion au bois. Le Centre de santé publique de Québec a réalisé une étude dans la région de Québec pour vérifier l'importance de la contamination par le formaldéhyde (HCHO), le dioxyde d'azote , les particules respirables (PM10) et l'oxyde de carbone (CO), dans des maisons munies d'appareils de combustion au bois. De plus, les symptÔmes et maladies respiratoires chez les résidants des habitations chauffées partiellement ou totalement au bois ont été examinés. Au total, 89 adultes et enfants ont participé à l'étude, à raison de 1 adulte et 1 enfant par résidence. Parmi les habitations, 59 étaient équipées d'appareils de combustion au bois, et 30 étaient chauffées exclusivement à l'électricité. Des échantillonnages ont été faits dans 49 maisons (41 avec un appareil de combustion au bois, 8 sans source de produits de combustion) pour des périodes de 12 (CO) ou 24 heures. On a documenté les symptÔmes respiratoires des participants (adultes et enfants) à l'aide d'un journal quotidien de symptÔmes. Des données étaient également recueillies sur les caractéristiques des habitations susceptibles d'altérer la qualité de l'air. En général, les concentrations des contaminants mesurés étaient basses autant pour les maisons avec ou sans appareil de combustion de bois. En fait, et seulement pour les PM10, 3 habitations munies d'un appareil de chauffage au bois avaient des niveaux de contaminants supérieurs aux recommandations de Santé Canada ou de l'Environmental Protection Agency respectivement pour l'air intérieur et extérieur. De ces 3 habitations, deux de celles-ci avaient des raisons autres que la présence d'un poêle à bois pour expliquer les valeurs documentées. Malgré tout, les résultats, mais surtout la littérature documentée, ont montré que les appareils de combustion de bois étaient susceptibles de générer du CO et des PM10. Parmi les variables de l'habitation les plus associées aux problèmes respiratoires ressentis par les enfants ou les adultes, on a documenté la présence d'animaux ou de moisissures et une faible fréquence d'ouverture des fenêtres. Les résidants qui demeuraient dans les habitations munies d'appareils de combustion au bois et qui disaient avoir subi des émanations de fumée, ont déclaré plus de maladies et de symptÔmes respiratoires. Les résidants d'habitations munies d'appareils de combustion au bois devraient, comme pour tous ceux qui habitent des résdiences équipées d'appareil de chauffage susceptibles de générer des produits de combustion, se munir de détecteurs de CO. Par ailleurs, un appareil de combustion au bois en ordre, bien installé, soigneusement entretenu et utilisé adéquatement constitue la meilleure garantie contre les riques non seulement d'incendie, mais également d'altération de la qualité de l'air intérieur, et conséquemment de la santé respiratoire des occupants.
