Book excerpt: LD is the colourful biography of Louis Taylor, the longest-serving mayor in Vancouver's history; he was first elected mayor in 1910, and served off and on until 1934, for a total of eleven years. Taylor's story is also the story of Vancouver in the early decades of the 20th century, a young city experiencing a turbulent adolescence. Louis Taylor, or LD as he was known, arrived in Vancouver from Chicago in 1896 at the age of 39. He got involved in the newspaper business, first as an executive with The Daily Province, then as proprietor of The World, during which time he built the World Tower, which remains one of Vancouver's landmark buildings (now better known as the Sun Tower). He launched his political career in 1902 when he ran successfully for licence commissioner; it was the first of 26 civic elections in which he ran, including 20 for mayor. In his early political life he was considered "the workers' friend" and was opposed by the city's business elite, who portrayed him as corrupt. He also had a reputation for being soft on crime, and was implicated in a 1928 police investigation that lost him an election. But his achievements included the establishment of the airport, a town planning commission, and the water board. His private life, however, was another story, a virtual soap opera that mirrored the ups and downs of his political career; his wife was addicted to opium, and he found himself mired in bigamy and divorce scandals. As Vancouver grew from small frontier town to a major international port city, LD saw the city through the Depression, and in a sense Vancouver grew up under his tutelage. LD: Mayor Louis Taylor and The Rise of Vancouver vividly documents the life of a man who dominated the city for years.

It reflects characters that are based off actual cases, whereby people surpassed or were blocked by learning issues. It’s written like a novel so as to allow for confidentiality, and to focus on the passion that gets people through the strains that are associated with it, rather than a step-by-step teaching methodology or text manual. www.johntoker.com Cynthia Brian, co-author of a NY Times Best Seller, interviews John, about his novel, LD Just Means Learn Differently, on World Talk Radio, www.star-style.com and syndicated on other Internet and radio stations. Excerpts: "All true teaching is building skills for independent thought." "Among the shattered glass, there are diamonds that must be preserved for those who feel broken."

Book L D the Littlest Dragster

Download or read book L D the Littlest Dragster written by Peter D. Mors and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-11 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: L.D., the Littlest Dragster, is a life lesson for small children written by two educators with former police experience. The story is a combination of traditional stranger danger lessons, as well as a lesson in the importance of obeying parents. Many times threats do not come from total strangers or from unfamiliar surroundings. Danger can lurk anywhere, including places where children and their families frequent. Little L.D. disobeys his parents in pursuit of his own hedonistic happiness. But his rebellion becomes seriously scary, and potentially life threatening, when he is confronted by the dangers of a world outside of his parents direct supervision. In the end, L.D.'s father comes to his rescue, but not before L.D. learns a valuable life lesson. The book uses race cars as the main characters in storybook fashion to maintain young children's interest while imparting a valuable safety lesson.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to the programming language Ladder Diagram (LD) used in Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC). The book provides a general introduction to PLC controls and can be used for any PLC brands. With a focus on enabling readers without an electrical education to learn Ladder programming, the book is suitable for learners without prior knowledge of Ladder. The book contains numerous illustrations and program examples, based on real-world, practical problems in the field of automation. CONTENTS - Background, benefits and challenges of Ladder programming - PLC hardware, sensors, and basic Ladder programming - Practical guides and tips to achieve good program structures - Theory and examples of flowcharts, block diagrams and sequence diagrams - Design guide to develop functions and function blocks - Examples of organizing code in program modules and functions - Sequencing using SELF-HOLD, SET/RESET and MOVE/ COMPARE - Complex code examples for a pump station, tank control and conveyor belt - Design, development, testing and simulation of PLC programs The book describes Ladder programming as described in the standard IEC 61131-3. PLC vendors understand this standard in different ways, and not all vendors follows the standard exactly. This will be clear through material from the vendor. This means that some of the program examples in this book may not work as intended in the PLC type you are using. In addition, there is a difference in how the individual PLC type shows graphic symbols and instructions used in Ladder programming. Note: This is a book for beginners and therefore advanced techniques such as ARRAY, LOOPS, STRUCT, ENUM, STRING, PID and FIFO are not included.

Book Men of Physics L D Landau

Download or read book Men of Physics L D Landau written by D. Ter Haar and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-22 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Men of Physics: L. D. Landau, Volume 2: Thermodynamics, Plasma Physics and Quantum Mechanics is dedicated to L. D. Landau's contributions in the fields of thermodynamics, plasma physics, and quantum mechanics. Landau's theory of second-order phase transitions is discussed, along with his contributions to nuclear physics, astrophysics, cosmic ray physics, and quantum field theory. This volume is comprised of 15 chapters and begins with a discussion on Landau's theory of second-order phase transitions, which includes his assumption that all thermodynamic functions would allow regular series expansions near the transition point. The following chapters focus on Landau's papers on the transport equation for ionized systems and on plasma oscillations; his contributions to nuclear physics, cosmic ray physics, and astrophysics; his work in pure quantum mechanics; and his contributions to quantum field theory. The second section elaborates on the theory of phase transitions; the transport equation in the case of Coulomb interactions; the vibrations of the electronic plasma; and the statistical theory of nuclei. The origin of stellar energy is also examined, along with the multiple production of particles during collisions of fast particles and the extension of the uncertainty principle to relativistic quantum theory. A theory of energy transfer in collisions is also described. The final chapter considers the conservation laws for weak interactions. This book will be a useful resource for physicists and students interested in the work of L. D. Landau.
