Within a forest stood a grand old tree, Whose head above the other plants rose high; He was the forests first-born. Sun and sky Had known him, and had smiled on him ere he Had kinsfolk near, or leafy brethren nigh; The wild birds brought to him their minstrelsy; The singers knew that when the scene was rude, He grew and gave a shelter to their race. By him the wandering melodists were wooed To trill and warble in that lonely place; A sanctuary in the solitude He gave to them. In him the birds could trace The forest's king, and so from hills and plains They flew to him, and sang their sweetest strains. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Trip to Maoriland New Zealand, the land of the Maori and the Moa, the country in which originally there was not a ower with a perfume or a bird that sang, was one of the most mys terious and desolate lands on this hemisphere. 'out of the track of the early mariners it was a great undertak ing in the. Years gone by to reach there, vessels taking six to eight months to reach its shores, where now it can be accomplished in about forty-five days. Ac cording to some it was uninhabited till by gales or tribal wars members of the Kanaka tribe (sandwich Islands) were driven to seek an asylum in this wild and mystic country To bear out that theory the customs of the Maoris and the Kanaka are similar; but, through clim atic conditions, they have grown taller and sturdier. As to animal life there was none until Captain Cook, the discoverer, landed some pigs, which fact, no doubt, was the cause of canibalism being practiced. N ow, what a transformation, fine cities, large tracts of cultivated land, woolen and other manufactories, -gold and coal mining, an immense frozen meat industry, with wool and wheat as a background; in fact everything that goes to make a prosperous country is in'full swing. The one thing is left, and will be there for all time, its grand and wildly rugged coast line, for it has that peculiarity, that its interior is sheltered from the rude blasts of.) gales, as a garden protected by a high wall. Book Fear and Temptation

Download or read book Fear and Temptation written by Terry Goldie and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1989-04-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Goldie skillfully reveals the ambivalence of white writers to indigenous culture through an examination of the stereotyping involved in the creation of the image of the "Other." The treacherous "redskin" and the "Indian maiden," embodiments of violence and sex, also evoke emotional signs of fear and temptation, of white repulsion from and attraction to the indigene and the land. Goldie suggests that white culture, deeply attracted to the impossible idea of becoming indigenous, either rejects native land claims and denies recognition of the original indigenes, or incorporates these claims into white assertions of native status. After comparing the works of Canadian author Rudy Wiebe and Australian author Patrick White, Goldie concludes by linking the results of his literary analysis to wider cultural concerns, particularly land rights. He shows that literary views of natives, both positive and negative, emphasize the same charac-teristics and he suggests that escape from this limited vision may open the door to solving the problems of native sovereignty.

Book excerpt: "Hunting pressure, habitat destruction, and introduced predators led to moa extinction by A.D. 1650 according to the previously held serial overkill model. In the currently accepted rapid "blitzkrieg" model, all the moas were gone by A.D. 1450, over 300 years before the first Europeans landed with Captain Cook in 1769. However a number of moa sighting claims have been made since 1769 and the moas lingered on until a later date in some remote, isolated areas."--Back cover.
