Book excerpt: The low complexity of layered processing makes the layered structure a promising candidate for MIMO systems with a large number of transmit antennas and higher order modulation. For broadband systems, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) appears promising for its immunity against delay spread. In addition, OFDM is especially suitable for frequency selective MIMO systems since the introduction of orthogonal subcarriers makes system design and implementation as simple as those for flat fading channels. Therefore, the combination of layered structure with OFDM is a promising technique for high-speed wireless data transmission. The proposed research is focused on the layered structure for MIMO-OFDM systems, where several techniques are proposed for performance enhancement, namely, channel estimation based on subspace tracking, parallel detection of group-wise space-time codes by predictive soft interference cancellation, quasi-block diagonal low-density parity-check codes (LDPC) coding and statistical data rate allocation for layered systems. For MIMO-OFDM systems, rank reduction by some linear transform matrix is necessary for channel estimation. In the proposed research, we propose a channel estimation algorithm for MIMO-OFDM systems, which uses the optimum low-rank channel approximation obtained by tracking the frequency autocorrelation matrix of the channel response. Then parallel detection algorithm is proposed for a modified layered system with group-wise space-time coding, where the structure of particular component space-time code trellises is exploited using partial information from the Viterbi decoder of the simultaneously decoded interfering component codes. Next we incorporate the layered structure with LDPC to develop a quasi-block diagonal LDPC space-time structure. The lower triangular structure of the parity check matrix introduces correlation between layers. Each layer, as a part of the whole codeword, can be decoded while taking information from other undetected layers to improve the decoding performance. In the end, a modified layered structure is proposed where the layer detection order is fixed and the data rate for each layer is allocated based on the detection order and channel statistics. With Gaussian approximation of layer capacities, we derive the optimum data rate allocation.

Book excerpt: Merging layered space-time coding (LST), which provides high data rate transmission with space-time block coding (STBC) provides transmit diversity and improved performance to wireless communication systems. This architecture is known as multilayered space-time coding (MLSTC). In this thesis we propose a decreased complexity minimum mean squared error (MMSE) detector based on the sorted QR decomposition (SQRD), intended for the detection of multi-user STBC systems. The proposed decoder has been proven to enhance the overall performance of the MLSTC architecture. It offers a lower computational complexity than that offered by conventional detectors such as group interference cancellation (GIC) detectors. In addition, the number of receive antennas required to perform detection is smaller than that required by the GIC detector. Further, in order for all groups, which can be viewed as individual users, to benefit from a similar performance, unequal power allocation strategy will be employed to the system. We also concatenate OFDM to the MLSTC scheme in order to combat a frequency selective channel. We then extend this scheme to space-frequency-time (SFT) codes in order to extract the maximum frequency diversity available from the channel. In this thesis, we also propose a new transceiver architecture for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The proposed scheme borrows ideas from the MLSTC and threaded space-time coding (TSTC) schemes in an effort to maximize the diversity order while maintaining a low complexity detection. Specifically, the proposed scheme has a structure similar to that of the MLSTC while it employs a spatial interleaver (SI) in front of the MLSTC encoder. We analyze the proposed scheme where we derive an upper bound on the bit error rate and derive the diversity-multiplexing gain trade-off curve. We present several examples through which we demonstrate the superiority of the proposed scheme over existing schemes.

Book excerpt: The capacity of wireless data communications is lagging behind demands due to unsatisfactory performance of the existing wireless networks, such as low data rates, low spectral efficiency and low quality of service. Space-time coding is an effective transmit diversity technique to combat fading in wireless communications. Space-time codes are a highly bandwidth-efficient approach to signalling within wireless communication that takes advantage of the spatial dimension by transmitting a number of data streams using multiple co-located antennas. There are various approaches to the coding structures, including space-time trellis coded modulation, space-time turbo codes and also layered architectures. The central issue in all these various coding structures is the exploitation of multipath effects in order to achieve very high spectral efficiencies. The spectral efficiencies of traditional wireless systems range between 1-5bps/sec/Hz but by using space-time techniques spectral efficiencies of 20-40bps/sec/Hz have been possible. Hence, space-time coding enables an increase in capacity by an order of magnitude. This is the main reason why space-time codes have been included in the standards for the third generation wireless communication systems and ultimately why Space-time Coding will be in great demand by individuals within industry and academia. The comprehensive understanding of space-time coding is essential in the implementation of 3G, and as the only title currently available, Space-Time Coding will be the standard text for Researchers, telecommunication engineers and network planners, academics and undergraduate/postgraduate students, telecommunications managers and consultants.
