It is markedly different from his previous works in style and has often been praised as a potential masterpiece. It was cut short by Stevenson's sudden death in 1894 from a cerebral hemorrhage. The novel is set at the time of the Napoleonic Wars. The novel tells the story of Archie Weir, a youth born into an upper-class Edinburgh family. Because of his Romantic sensibilities and sensitivity, Archie is estranged from his father, who is depicted as the coarse and cruel judge of a criminal court. By mutual consent, Archie is banished from his family of origin and sent to live as the local laird on a family property in the vicinity of the Borders hamlet Hermiston. While serving as the laird, Archie meets and falls in love with Kirstie (Christina). As the two are deepening their relationship, the book breaks off. Confusingly, there are two characters in the novel called Christina, the younger of whom is Archie's sweetheart.

Book excerpt: Mr. Henry James, speaking of the quarrel between Alan Breck and David Balfour in Kidnapped, declares that he knows of " few better examples of the way genius has ever a surprise in its pocket — keeps an ace, as it were, up its sleeve." And in Weir of Hermiston we have a surprise of an even higher order from Stevenson's pocket; that pocket which during his lifetime seemed like the proverbial small boy's—almost inexhaustible, stuffed full of a delightfully heterogeneous mass, sometimes of jingling trinkets, and sometimes of the oddest and rarest treasures. It may seem rash to declare a half-finished and half-revised book the greatest achievement of an author who had so high a passion for finality as Stevenson, but many will unhesitatingly declare Weir of Hermiston Stevenson's best book.

Born and educated in Edinburgh, Stevenson suffered from serious bronchial trouble for much of his life, but continued to write prolifically and travel widely in defiance of his poor health. Henley, the last of whom may have provided the model for Long John Silver in Treasure Island.

Book excerpt: The tale represents the only occasion on which Stevenson was drawn to adopt the mystery type of novel in which the reader is carried forward by the incidents surrounding a secret which is kept to the last. As explained in the Epilogue, familiarly addressed to his friend, Will H. Low, he had aimed at giving greater realism to this form of story by a more gradual approach to the essence of the yarn. The reader is allowed first to live with the characters for a while instead of stepping with them into their adventures straight on his introduction to them. Hence the first half-dozen chapters, with their scenes in Paris and Edinburgh, are almost without bearing on the incidents afterwards developed, and might well be cited against Stevenson's doctrine that the opening of a story is of a piece with its end. Evidently the Prologue, anticipating Dodd's adventures, is used as a device to cast unity over the whole in something of the manner of Mr. Conrad.

In Kidnapped the Appin murder is a mere glimpse ; in Catriona the story is deeply involved with the trial which followed it and with the personages which figured in this piece of the aftermath of the '45 in the Highlands. It is historical in a much larger measure and closer relation than the tale of which it is the continuation ; it depends so much less on the element of excitement, and so much more on its drawings of people, that the two scarcely make a homogeneous work.
