Book excerpt: The Laxdaela saga is an Icelandic Viking saga (story) of the men and women of the Salmon River valley involving the clan of Laxardalur. An amalgam of historical fact, myth, epic, romance, anachronism, and literary invention, the Laxdaela Saga is, in essence, a dramatization of the circumstances surrounding a Norse blood-feud between two sides of a great dynasty; in its second and decisive portion, it treats a love triangle that re-ignites the feud and its adjoining intrigues. Guorun Osvifursdottir, who is famous for her beauty is our protagonist. Courted by the two foster-brothers Kjartan Olafsson and Bolli orleiksson. Guorun preferred Kjartan, but she gave herself to Bolli, because of a false rumour that Kjartan was engaged to Ingibjorg, the sister of King Olafur Tryggvason. The two foster-brothers engaged in hostilities which ended with Bolli killing Kjartan, and Bolli being killed by Kjartan's kinsmen. The story is carried forward by the mysterious workings of fate, symbolized by the prophetic dreams of Gudrun. Noted for its detached narrative style and ornately-patterned structure, the Laxdaela Saga remains a highly influential work of Scandinavian literature and is considered an outstanding example of medieval prose romance. It is considered to be one of the most important Icelandic sagas, originally written in Old Icelandic; probably sometime around the year 1245 AD. It is noted for its mention of the first known Norseman in the Varangian Guard: the Icelander Bolli Bollason.

Book excerpt: Laxdæla saga, or The Saga of the People of Laxárdalr, is one of the ancient Icelanders' sagas and a great example of the medieval European heroic epic. Although it is believed to be written in the 13th century, it tells of the people of Iceland from the late 9th century to the early 11th century. The saga presents the love story that evolves into a classic triangle, as two close friends who grow up together fall in love with one girl. It involves enmity between the former friends, a competition that grew to the size of the war, and indecisiveness able to keep a reader in suspense for about seven centuries now.

Book excerpt: Written around 1245 by an unknown author, the Laxdaela Saga is an extraordinary tale of conflicting kinships and passionate love, and one of the most compelling works of Icelandic literature. Covering 150 years in the lives of the inhabitants of the community of Laxriverdale, the saga focuses primarily upon the story of Gudrun Osvif's-daughter: a proud, beautiful, vain and desirable figure, who is forced into an unhappy marriage and destroys the only man she has truly loved – her husband's best friend. A moving tale of murder and sacrifice, romance and regret, the Laxdaela Saga is also a fascinating insight into an era of radical change – a time when the Age of Chivalry was at its fullest flower in continental Europe, and the Christian faith was making its impact felt upon the Viking world.

Book excerpt: This accessible study of Northern European shamanistic practice, or seidr, explores the way in which the ancient Norse belief systems evoked in the Icelandic Sagas and Eddas have been rediscovered and reinvented by groups in Europe and North America. The book examines the phenomenon of altered consciousness and the interactions of seid-workers or shamanic practitioners with their spirit worlds. Book excerpt: A GREAT READ FOR KIDS! In this volume you will find 14 of the most popular Norse Myths and Tales rewritten especially for children. Tales and stories like Odin’s Reward, Tyr and the Wolf, Freyja’s Necklace, The Hammer of Thor, A Gift from Frigga, The Stealing of Iduna, Skadi, Ægir’s Feast and more. This little volume is the outcome of several years’ experience of the telling of the classic Norse myths to classes of children. There are graphic descriptions in the Norse tales of the hard struggle with rugged nature and the severe climate of the North. The tales and adventures of equally rugged men and women, of bravery and heroes in a time when heroes were needed and men were knighted for achieving great feats - and great hose feats were. Then, too, the moral tone of the Norse myths is higher, purer, and more steadfast than that of the Greek tales, and is more congenial to our Western point of view which has been influenced more by the Teuton than the Greek. But this is simply not a number of made up tales, many works were consulted in the preparation of this volume, and the compilers are especially indebted to the following: Thorpe’s translation of Sæmund’s “Edda”; “The Younger Edda,” in translations; Anderson’s “Norse Mythology”; Guerber’s “Myths of Northern Lands”; William and Mary Howitt’s “Literature and Romance of Northern Europe”; and Mallet’s “Northern Antiquities.”
