Book excerpt: Lawmen of the old west played a juggling act as far as the law was concerned. It was necessary for a successful lawman to be both tougher and smarter than the outlaw or the outlaw would win. He sometimes did. The Earp Brothers were no saints. Marshal Henry Plumber was hanged for crimes he committed while wearing a badge. Most of the sheriffs and marshals wearing badges also played at gambling, sometimes owning the gambling concessions in the town saloons. As one would suspect, it was gambling that caused much of the trouble in town. The lawmen found themselves both supporting gambling while controlling angry gamblers. Most lawmen were good with guns and practiced daily. Being a second late on a draw against a fast outlaw gunman could spell the difference in which man lived. Western author Alton Pryor has brought a host of western lawmen together in one book.

Download or read book Arizona Outlaws and Lawmen written by Marshall Trimble and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2010-10-15 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: True stories of the wild and dangerous world of the Arizona Territory—includes photos. A refuge for outlaws at the close of the 1800s, the Arizona Territory was a wild, lawless land of greedy feuds, brutal killings and figures of enduring legend. These gunfighters included heroes as well as killers, and some were considered both. Bandit Pearl Hart committed one of the last recorded stagecoach robberies in the country, and James Addison Reavis pulled off the most extraordinary real estate scheme in the West. But with fearless lawmen like C.P. Owens and George Ruffner at hand, swift justice was always nearby. In this collection of true stories, Arizona’s official state historian and celebrated storyteller Marshall Trimble brings to life the rough-and-tumble characters from the Grand Canyon State’s most terrific tales of outlawry and justice.

Book Mean As Hell

Download or read book Mean As Hell written by Dee Harkey and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-02 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Mexico rancher and lawman Dee (Daniel R.) Harkey describes himself as having “been shot at more times than any man in the world not engaged in war.” Mean as Hell, originally published in 1948 when Harkey was 83, is his detailed, witty autobiography about his youth in San Saba County of west Texas, where in 1882 he learned from his brother Joe, the sheriff, to “be damned sure you don’t get killed, but don’t kill anybody unless you have to” and his adult life in Eddy County after moving to Karlsbad (then Eddy) in 1890. Harkey served as a New Mexico peace officer from 1893 until 1911. Among the many cattle rustlers, train robbers, and other outlaws he confronted were Jim Miller, whom Harkey fingers as Pat Garrett’s real killer, and the Dalton Gang. Harkey observes that, in 1948, “cattle stealing has gone out of fashion. We’ve gotten civilized. Instead..., we now have statesman who practice nepotism, pad the public payrolls and graft as much as they think they can get away with (in an honorable way, of course) just like the folks back east.” Readers interested in many aspects of the territorial and outlaw West will enjoy Dee Harkey’s lively stories.

Book The Life and Death of Juan Coy

Download or read book The Life and Death of Juan Coy written by Charles L. Olmsted and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The West was still wild in South Texas in the 1880s and 1890s for a rich Anglo landowner and a Mexican hired gun-outlaw-lawman. The authors explore a shoot-out that was more explosive than the gunfight at the O.K. Corral in a town that no longer exists. The Coy family was involved with the law, and especially Juan Coy, by his own accounts gunned down at least thirty-three opponents. Coy earned his hard reputation after the Civil War during the turbulent Reconstruction period. It followed him through brushes with the law and his lifelong friendship with the Butler family in Karnes County.

Book 100 Oklahoma Outlaws Gangsters Lawmen

Download or read book 100 Oklahoma Outlaws Gangsters Lawmen written by Laurence Yadon and published by Pelican Publishing. This book was released on 2010-09-23 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only thing wilder than Oklahoma in the late nineteenth century are the tales that continue to surround it. In the days of the Wild West, Oklahoma was teeming with assassins, guerillas, hijackers, kidnappers, gangs, and misfits of every size and shape imaginable. Featuring such legendary characters as Billy the Kid, Bonnie and Clyde, Machine Gun Kelly, Belle Starr, and Pretty Boy Floyd, this book combines recorded fact with romanticized legend, allowing the reader to decide how much to believe. Violent and out of control, the figures covered in 100 Oklahoma Outlaws, Gangsters, and Lawmen often left behind numerous victims, grisly accounts, and unforgettable stories. Included are criminals like James Deacon Miller, the devout Methodist and hired assassin. Righteous and devious, he often avoided the gallows by convincing others to admit to his murders. Rufus Buck, a man of Native American descent, targeted white settlers. His crimes against them became so heinous as to cause the Creek nation to take up arms against him. The answer to criminals such as these came in the form of Hanging Judge Parker and other officers of the law. Although they were greatly outnumbered, they provided some balance to the chaos. This historical compilation covers every memorable outlaw and lawman who passed through Oklahoma.
