Book Designing a Law Library to Encourage Learning

Download or read book Designing a Law Library to Encourage Learning written by Lee F. Peoples and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries the traditional approach to library design has focused on allocating sufficient space for the collection, study space, and staff offices. In contrast, the process of designing a library to encourage learning begins by building institutional consensus around important learning behaviors and creating spaces that encourage those behaviors. Several university libraries have adopted the design for learning approach over the past decade. Law libraries have yet to explore this concept. The article begins with a brief historical introduction to law library design. Design for learning is introduced and discussed in the context of law libraries. Examples of how the concept can be used to ensure compliance with accreditation standards and enact reforms mentioned in the Carnegie Report are provided. Specific design traits that encourage learning by fostering collaboration and allowing students to balance the social and communal aspects of study are discussed. The article concludes with an exploration of how high quality law library spaces can increase enrollment and encourage generous alumni support.

Book Learning Environments Through Design

Download or read book Learning Environments Through Design written by Robert Glenn Barfield and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The premise of the project was to investigate the idea of inspiration as it relates to architecture and more importantly educational facilities and the individuals that inhabit them. In order to facilitate this investigation, three distinct architectural issues were established. These issues, in order of their perceived importance, are expression, environment, and place. With regard to the primary thesis issue of expression, a university library should be both expressive and innovative in form, function, space, and site. A university library often serves as the center for the campus community. The library is a repository for the collective knowledge of the campus. To this end, it should be expressive of its function and an important stature with the campus community. The issues of expression manifest itself throughout the project in terms of architectural form and its relationship to function and the contents that are housed inside the building. Lastly, the metaphysical qualities of light were of utmost importance in the design. In terms of environment, the most important aspect is the use of daylight and its manipulation. This was achieved through appropriate aperture size, location, and orientation. Through the use of appropriate technologies, a constant level of 30 to 40 footcandles was achieved in the reading and book stacks areas. Lastly, the idea of place was addressed throughout the design process. A university library should serve as a continued source of enrichment for the campus community. It should separate itself from, but fit, the other buildings that form the university context. This was achieved through the use of appropriate materials, and the creation of communal space that enriches the building and its inhabitants.
