Download or read book Plural Policing in the Global North written by Nathalie Hirschmann and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-24 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume brings together an international group of authors discussing basic concepts and approaches to plural policing as well as aspects and practices of plural policing in specific locations. The context comes from the fact that policing activities are nowadays performed by a growing number and variety of police and non-police stakeholders. This development is internationally discussed as ‘pluralisation of policing’ or plural policing. This book provides insights into plural policing across different countries of the global North. It looks at day-to-day security which is mainly produced at the local level, and where there is considerable diversity in philosophy and practice. Therefore, it allows learnings for possible future developments in the field. This volume contributes to policing studies and is of interest to the wide range of academics dealing with questions of security and order, as well as policy makers and practitioners working on security in their regions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The substantially revised third edition of The Handbook of Security provides the most comprehensive analysis of scholarly security debates and issues to date. It reflects the developments in security technology, the convergence of the cyber and security worlds, and the fact that security management has become even more business focused. It covers newer topics like terrorism, violence, and cybercrime through various offence types such as commercial robbery and bribery. This handbook comprises mostly brand new chapters and a few thoroughly revised chapters, with discussions of the impact of the pandemic. It includes contributions from some of the world's leading scholars from an even broader geographic scale to critique the way security is provided and managed. It speaks to professionals working in security and students studying security-related courses. Download or read book Police Leadership and Management written by Margaret Mitchell and published by Federation Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the new contexts and challenges for contemporary police leaders and managers in the changing landscapes of policing. The governance of contemporary police organisations requires leaders and managers, even at the local level, to work in and understand complex social, political and organisational environments. The wide range of topics in this collection explores what is changing, what is known about the impact of these changes and what leaders and managers now need to be able to do or anticipate as a consequence. Operational policing is no longer the militaristic singular activity it once was, but embraces new models of 'partnership' and 'community' to manage crime and disorder. Equally, while command and control models are still an essential of many aspects of policing, managing police officers and staff increasingly depends on their professional development and encouraging enthusiasm and innovation. Policing takes place under conditions of intense scrutiny from the media and from the community; and crime and disorder is the subject of much political debate. Each of these broad areas are addressed and present a surprising range of perspectives. The volume is aimed at every level of management and leadership in policing, researchers of policing and students of police management and leadership.

Book excerpt: The pursuit of security is now central to the development of public policy and a driving force behind the spread of private policing. Just as new theoretical frameworks are needed to deal with the increasing tendency of crime control policies to focus on risk reduction, new forms of governance are also required to deal with the rapid growth of the private security industry. This volume brings together a wide range of contributions from leading scholars in the field and includes international and comparative perspectives on the challenges posed by the rise of the 'security society'.

Download or read book I Have Nothing to Hide written by Heidi Boghosian and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accessible guide that breaks down the complex issues around mass surveillance and data privacy and explores the negative consequences it can have on individual citizens and their communities. No one is exempt from data mining: by owning a smartphone, or using social media or a credit card, we hand over private data to corporations and the government. We need to understand how surveillance and data collection operates in order to regain control over our digital freedoms—and our lives. Attorney and data privacy expert Heidi Boghosian unpacks widespread myths around the seemingly innocuous nature of surveillance, sets the record straight about what government agencies and corporations do with our personal data, and offers solutions to take back our information. “I Have Nothing to Hide” is both a necessary mass surveillance overview and a reference book. It addresses the misconceptions around tradeoffs between privacy and security, citizen spying, and the ability to design products with privacy protections. Boghosian breaks down misinformation surrounding 21 core myths about data privacy, including: • “Surveillance makes the nation safer.” • “No one wants to spy on kids.” • “Police don’t monitor social media.” • “Metadata doesn’t reveal much about me.” • “Congress and the courts protect us from surveillance.” • “There’s nothing I can do to stop surveillance.” By dispelling myths related to surveillance, this book helps readers better understand what data is being collected, who is gathering it, how they’re doing it, and why it matters.

Download or read book Private Security Trends 1970 to 2000 written by William Clay Cunningham and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 1990 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the growth and changes in the private security industry between 1970 and 1990, discusses emerging and continuing issues and trends in private security and its relationships with public law enforcement, and recommends measure and research to improve cooperation between private security and law enforcement. Data came from a review of previous research, individual and focus group interviews, and an analysis of market data. Results indicated that the increased use of locks, security lighting, and other private and public security measures reflect a growing fear of crime, even while statistics show stable or declining crime rates. In addition, the frequency and cost of business crime are increasing. Additional crime problems include breaches of business ethics, drug abuse, computer crime, and terrorism. The primary responsibility for protective measures has also been shifting from public law enforcement to private security, indicating the need for greater cooperation between the public and private sectors. In addition, contract security companies are growing, while proprietary security organizations are decreasing in number. Major issues include the privatization of police support tasks, false alarms, police moonlighting, and the growing use of private adjudication.
