Book Lava Beds National Monument

Download or read book Lava Beds National Monument written by Lee Juillerat and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The region in far northeastern California encompassed by Lava Beds National Monument is often called the "Land of Burnt Out Fires." The name reflects a landscape created by fiery volcanic forces, including cataclysmic events that created more than 700 lava tube caves and an aboveground landscape shaped and fractured by lava flows and other geologic turmoil. Despite its tortured landscape, the region has also been a place of human habitation for thousands of years. Early natives traveled through the lava beds as part of their seasonal travels for food and shelter. The Modoc Indians' knowledge of that landscape, a natural lava fortress now known as Captain Jack's Stronghold, was used during the Modoc War of 1872 and 1873. Modocs, settlers, and others who followed--sheep ranchers, homesteaders, cave discoverers, tourists, spelunkers, and US Forest Service and National Park Service managers--have played prominent roles in creating the region's, and Lava Beds National Monument's, always evolving human history.

Book Visitor Impacts on Cave Entrances at Lava Beds National Monument

Download or read book Visitor Impacts on Cave Entrances at Lava Beds National Monument written by Tonya M. Vanover and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Human activity above and within caves has altered the biodiversity within cave ecosystems. The potential loss of biodiversity in cave entrances has been overlooked. Many similar caves at Lava Beds National Monument (LBNM) in northeastern California provided a rare opportunity to investigate the effects of human activity on the cover, species diversity and richness of lichens and mosses. I inventoried and surveyed the lichens and mosses in the entrances of 8 high access (HA) and 8 low access (LA) caves with an 8-section cover scale. This survey added 53 lichens and 7 mosses to the list of 16 lichen and no moss species previously recorded within LBNM. Thirty-two lichen and 5 moss species were common to all surveyed cave entrances. One lichen and 2 moss species were specific to HA entrances, while 19 lichen and no moss species were specific to LA entrances. Mean cover, species diversity and richness in HA caves was significantly reduced by 67%, 75% and 64% compared to LA entrances, respectively. I conclude that human activity has significantly reduced the cover, species diversity and richness of cave entrance flora"--Document.
