Book Banks Exchanges and Regulators

Download or read book Banks Exchanges and Regulators written by Ranald C. Michie and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-26 with total page 762 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Never have financial markets been subjected to a period of change as rapid and extensive as took place from the 1970s onwards. In the 1970s global financial markets were controlled by governments, compartmentalized along national boundaries, and segregated according to the particular activities they engaged in. This all disintegrated in the decades that followed under the pressure of market forces, global integration, and a revolution in the technology of trading. One product of this transformation was the Global Financial Crisis of 2008, which exposed the fragility of the new structures created and cast a long shadow that we still live in today. The response to that crisis has shaped the global financial system, which has been tested once again by the coronavirus pandemic. However, none of the outcomes of this transformation were inevitable, despite the forces at work. They were the product of decisions taken at the time for a multitude of reasons. Banks, exchanges, and regulators were faced with unprecedented challenges and opportunities as a revolution swept away traditional ways of conducting banking, the methods used to trade in financial markets, and the rules and regulations employed to enforce discipline. In this book Ranald C. Michie provides an authoritative and unrivalled account of this upheaval based on a careful and exhaustive reading of the Financial Times over the last four decades, using it to provide a source of material unmatched by any other in terms of depth and coverage. By studying what happened and why in real time, it is possible to explain the decisions taken that shaped the course of the transformation and its repercussions.

Book Fight to Win

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AJ Withers draws on their own experiences as an organizer, extensive interviews with the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP) activists and Toronto bureaucrats, and freedom of information requests to provide a detailed account of the work of OCAP. This book shows that poor people’s organizing can be effective even in periods of neoliberal retrenchment. Fight to Win tells the stories of four key OCAP homelessness campaigns: stopping the criminalization of homeless people in a public park; the fight for poor people’s access to the Housing Shelter Fund; a campaign to improve the emergency shelter system and the City’s overarching, but inadequate, Housing First policy; and the attempt by the City of Toronto to drive homeless people from encampments during the COVID pandemic. This book shows how power works at the municipal level, including the use of a multitude of demobilization tactics, devaluing poor people as sources of knowledge about their own lives, and gaslighting poor people and anti-poverty activists. AJ Withers also details OCAP’s dual activist strategy — direct-action casework coupled with mass mobilization — for both immediate need and long-term change. These campaigns demonstrate the validity of OCAP’s longstanding critiques of dominant homelessness policies and practices. Each campaign was fully or partially successful: these victories were secured by anti-poverty activists through the use of, and the threat of, direct disruptive action tactics.

Book excerpt: ‘Robert Cohen’s book, Acting Power, follows the tradition of his other book, Acting One, and has been the veritable bible for acting teachers for the last quarter century.’ – David Krasner, Emerson College ‘This book, above all else, is an attempt to explore the qualities of acting power.... to suggest to you, the actor, an approach toward not merely good acting but powerful acting. Great actors display the power to frighten – and the power to seduce – and can shift between the one and the other like a violinist can her notes.’ – From the Preface The first edition of Acting Power was a groundbreaking work of acting theory which applied sociological and psychological principles to actor training. The book went on to influence a generation of theatre and performance studies students and academics, and was translated into five languages. This carefully revised 21st Century Edition (re)considers, in the context of today’s field: questions such as ‘should actors act from the inside or the outside?’ and ‘should the actor live the role or present the role?’; contemporary research into communication theory, cybernetics, and cognitive science; brilliantly illuminating and witty exercises for solo study and classroom use, and a through-line of useful references to classic plays; penetrating observations about the actor’s art by more than 75 distinguished professional actors and directors. Cohen’s elegant and rigorous updates emphasise the continuing relevance of his uniquely integrated and life-affirming approach to this field. Book Approaches to Teaching Gaines s The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman and Other Works

Download or read book Approaches to Teaching Gaines s The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman and Other Works written by John Wharton Lowe and published by Modern Language Association. This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman tells the story of a woman, a community, and the African American experience from the Civil War through Jim Crow to the civil rights movement. This narrative and Gaines's other novels and short stories explore the life of blacks in the South, their religious traditions and folkways, and their struggles under oppression. The southern communities described are diverse: blacks, creoles of color, poor whites, and wealthy landowners. Part 1 of this volume provides biographical information about Ernest Gaines and a discussion of critical and background studies of his narrative. The essays in part 2 will help teachers of African American literature, American literature, and southern literature convey to their students various aspects of Gaines's work and the adaptations of it in relation to southern literature, history, music, folk culture, and vernaculars of English.
