Book excerpt: If you've ever heard a Jewish, Italian, Libyan, Catholic, Irish, Mexican, Polish, Belgian, Norwegian, or an Essex Girl, Newfie, Mother-in-Law, or joke aimed at a minority, this book of Malaysian jokes is for you. In this not-so-original book, The Best Ever Book of Malaysian Jokes; Lots and Lots of Jokes Specially Repurposed for You-Know-Who, Mark Young takes a whole lot of tired, worn out jokes and makes them funny again. The Best Ever Book of Malaysian Jokes is so unoriginal; it's original. And, if you don't burst out laughing from at least one Malaysian joke in this book, there's something wrong with you. This book has so many Malaysian jokes; you won't know where to start. For example: Why do Malaysians wear slip-on shoes? You need an IQ of at least 4 to tie a shoelace. *** An evil genie captured a Malaysian and her two friends and banished them to the desert for a week. The genie allowed each person to bring one thing. The first friend brought a canteen so he wouldn't die of thirst. The second friend brought an umbrella to keep the sun off. The Malaysian brought a car door, because if it got too hot she could just roll down the window! *** Did you hear about the Malaysian who wore two jackets when she painted the house? The instructions on the can said: "Put on two coats." *** Why do Malaysians laugh three times when they hear a joke? Once when it is told, once when it is explained to them, and once when they understand it. ***

Book Media Consumption in Malaysia

Download or read book Media Consumption in Malaysia written by Tony Wilson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-01-09 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do visitors immersing themselves in material places such as shopping malls or video sites online make sense of the experience, enabling criticizing - or consenting to content? How is this evident in behaviour? Reflecting on accounts by Chinese, Indian, Malay and Indigenous members of Malaysian society, this book addresses these questions from a practices perspective increasingly adopted by scholars in marketing and media studies. The volume provides an account of practices theory from its origins in critical hermeneutics (such as Heidegger, Gadamer and Ricoeur), as reflecting on the processes of embodied understanding, developing alongside interpretive and reception theory. Part I draws upon authors as diverse as Heidegger and Henry Jenkins, with a practices perspective on media and mall consuming shown as developing from forty years of theorizing about audience activity. An empirical study of Malaysian blogging and branding on YouTube exemplifies this approach. Part II considers Malaysians absorbed in social media sites, as everyday visitors and the subjects of consumer research. The book then returns to the material world, exploring the horizons of understanding from which Malaysians enter their mediated malls, and concludes by positioning media practices theory within a spectrum of philosophical ideas. Recognizing the current (re)turn in Consumer and Media Studies to employing hermeneutics as an account of our embodied human understanding, this book presents its major philosophical proponents, showing how close attention to their writing can now inform and shape research on ubiquitous screen users. As such, it will be of particular interest to students and scholars of Media Studies, Asian Studies and Marketing Studies.

Book Doing Lifework in Malaysia

Download or read book Doing Lifework in Malaysia written by Souchou Yao and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-04-26 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malaysia is a prosperous, developing nation in Southeast Asia. Its citizens face the problems that beset people’s lives all over the world. These problems are about the family and economic security, as well as the existential choices we customarily associate with the residents of developed societies. Through the anthropologist’s art of ethnography and cultural analysis, the book shows the way ordinary Malaysians manage the contingencies, the chanciness in their daily existence. In a mildly postcolonial gesture, Doing Lifework in Malaysia transports the work of Heidegger, Arendt, Camus, Sartre—masters of European existentialism—to a recognizably ‘Third World’ situation. The result is a series of penetrating and illuminating essays that cover a broad range of social actors, among them a Tamil domestic servant, the film maker Jasmin Ahmed, a Malay corporate wheeler-and-dealer turned ecologist, a group of Chinese traders in the Sarawak interior and a female ex-communist insurgent. As such, this fascinating study examines the Malaysian social life afresh, and in the process brings into focus issues not normally covered in other accounts: Hindu worship as a defiance against tradition, gift exchange and globalization, race envy and psychoanalysis, petite capitalism and solitude.
