Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 76: February 19, 1914 Let us now consider what loyalty to Christ involves. It means, first of all, loyalty to His teachings and obedience to His commands. It means that nothing short of the life He led will suit our ideal. It means now that He has shown us the possibility of living a per feet life, that we should strive to be perfect, even as our Father which is in heaven is perfect. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 76: June 4, 1914 So that, it appears distinctly that it is the young women who are most inclined to follow the outsider, and to become associated in marriage with non-believers, which is a pity. The number of members of the Church divorced during the year is 163; of this number 59 had been married in the temples, and 104 by civil ceremony. I think that here is a point Worthy of observation by the Latter day Saints. Men and women who become united in the holy bonds of wedlock, according to the rites and ceremonies of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, enter into that solemn relation ship with better understanding of the duties and responsibilities of marriage than others do, because they are taught more fully the facts in the case. There were excommunicated from the Church, in the stakes of Zion, 55 persons. Mostly, I suppose, for being carried away by every wind of doctrine. We have some foolish people who take up with any chimera, or foolish notion that anybody may advance to them. They are to be pitied. Baptisms into the Church, of children and adults, within the stakes, numbered 35 to the thousand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 76: March 19, 1914 No greater refutation of Bishop Ryle's false teaching is neces sary. If the members of the Church need to be perfected; if the body of Christ needs edifying; if it is the desire of the Lord that we come to a unity of the faith, and to a knowledge of the Son of God; if it is necessary for us to be kept from being tossed to and fro and carried about with every. Wind of doctrine, then inspired ministers are necessary in the Church of Christ. The reason that the Christian world is in the deplorable condition it is at the present time, is because it has been for many hundreds of years without an inspired ministry. Yet in the face of this terrible con dition, Bishop Ryle says inspired officers are not necessary. Now, dear reader, which of these men do you consider a true servant of god-joseph Smith, who advocates the necessity of an inspired ministry, and who is in perfect harmony with the scrip tures, or Bishop Ryle, who, in direct opposition to the teaching of holy writ, declares that such officers are not necessary? Again the bishop gives evidence that Joseph Smith was a true prophet. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 76: July 9, 1914 If it be necessary that the ordinance Of water-baptism and the authorized laying on of hands for the bestowal of the Holy Ghost be performed vicariously by the living in the interests Of the salea t'ion of the dead, it is plainly evident that the higher ordinances requisite to the possible exaltation Of the departed shall be like wise attended to by the living as proxies for the dead. This, then, is a further answer to the question as to why the Latter-day Saints build temples and minister therein - that they thus provide the means whereby their departed ancestors who lived and died without a knowledge of the saving gospel of Christ in its fulness may be saved and exalted, provided they accept the gospel as it is preached unto them in the spirit world, and thus make it possible for the dead to be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 76: February 5, 1914 The Apostle Paul says, N ow faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (heb. 11: And Joseph the Prophet adds: From this we learn that faith is the assurance which men have of things which they have not seen. In order to have faith in God, we must have a belief, or assur ance, that He does exist. The Apostle Paul says (heb. 11: 6) Without faith it is impossible to please him; for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Man by his own seeking cannot come to God; but he must believe that God exists, then, through the exercise of faith, he may hope to obtain a knowledge of God. In order to believe that God is a rewarder of all those who seek Him, man must trust God, or have confidence in His words and promises. Many may ask how the idea that there is a God, who is all power ful and is able to reward man for his labors, was first conceived by man. For the diligent seeker after truth, a careful study of the scriptures will give convincing evidence of how the existence of God was first made known to man. In Genesis, chapter 2, it is written that God made man' in His own image, and called him Adam - that God talked with Adam and gave him commandments. Adam knew the face of God, heard His voice and talked with Him. Therefore Adam knew that God existed. Again, it is recorded in Genesis 3: 8-10, that after Adam, with his wife Eve, had partaken of the forbidden fruit, they heard the voice of God as He walked in the garden, for it is written, And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of day; and Adam and his wife hid themselves amongst the trees of the garden. There we also find an answer to the question asked by God, Adam, where art thou? As follows: I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afriad. These facts prove two things; first, that God is a glorified personage, and second, that Adam, after the fall, retained a knowledge of God's existence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 76: August 27, 1914 The question may be asked, Is this a new message, or gospel? To which we answer, No, indeed; it is the same old, beautiful story which has been such a power for good in all ages, and was taught by Christ and His apostles in the days of old with such great force that on one occasion the multitude exclaimed, Men and brethren, what shall we do to be saved? Such a day of power was Pentecost, when three thousand accepted the gospel and were baptized for the remission of their sins, and received the gift of the Holy Ghost. This is the gospel message, faith in God and Christ, repentance for sin, baptism for the remission of sins, the gift of the Holy Ghost to follow. These are the things neces sary for admission in to Christ's kingdom. What the people need, is again to come to an understanding of their relationship and obligation to God, and a practical applica tion of this knowledge in their daily lives. On the subject James Barr, M.D., says, Pneumonia and typhoid fever are the two principal diseases in which alcohol has been largely prescribed, but in the latter disease it is even more useless than in the former; there is scarcely an indication for its use, while the protracted nature of the disease allows the medicament more time to work mischief. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 76: November 26, 1914 In conclusion, let it be borne in mind that to Mormonism has been assigned the sacred and important duty of making possible the salvation of both living and dead. When we compare the countless numbers of dead with the comparatively few who still live, we see not only the universal application of the gospel of Christ, but we are forced to admit that this essential counterpart of the plan of salvation has not been receiving the attention which we, individually, should render it. One of the unique features of Mormonism is, that each one of us, even the weakest, has illimitable opportunities for service in the accomplishment of that great ideal - the exaltation of the human family. The vital ques tion is, then, Are we doing our part? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. N 0 one disputes the fact that the Church was an outgrowth of his work, and few refuse to admit that he died for the testimony he bore. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 76: May 28, 1914 They would make you believe, if they could, that the Father and Son did not come and reveal themselves to Joseph Smith, in person; that it was but the imagination of Joseph Smith. We know better. The truth is overwhelming to the contrary. The testi mony of the Spirit of the living God bears record to the contrary, and it teaches men that these things are true, and that those who deny them are simply going outside of the truth into the fallacies and follies of the philosophies of men. They are not willing to abide in the solid, simple truth which God has revealed for the salvation of the souls of men. Beware of men who come to you with heresies of this kind, who would make you to think or feel that the Almighty, who made heaven and earth and created all things, is limited in His dominion over earthly things to the capacities of mortal men. They try to make you believe that God is too busy and too great to trouble about earthly things. I am glad that there are comparatively few such characters in the world, and I hope that they will become more and more scarce, until they are extinct. Now, I feel that I must not detain you too long. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 76: October 8, 1914 The thinking man, regardless of his religious affiliations, often asks himself the question: What am I here for? And replies by saying: I am but one of an illimitable mass of humanity, heading for - where? Placed on the earth for what purpose? As pointed out, science is of necessity silent on the subject, for the solution to such a question lies outside its scope. Theology must, therefore, be called upon to answer the query.
