Book excerpt: the results of my research that has inspired me to publish this first edition of The Rhode Island Legislative Black and Latino Caucus book, consisting of the published biographies of the 16 Black and Latino elected State Representatives, and five State Senators, in celebration of such progress and to make it widely available. Black and Latino Public Servants history and contributions deserve to be highlighted; and celebrated. They are phenomenal servants in state and municipal institutions. The media, overall, overlooks public servants of color. Finding it to tear them down when they experience missteps in their careers and the lack of directory of such Public Servants across the state. This is the beginning of what I envisioned to be a series of historical documentation of Color elected and appointed Public Servants,

Fifty Women, in addition to sharing fifty life stories, represents fifty slices of Latin American and Caribbean culture that excite and touch our hearts in a firm yet tender way. The lives of these fifty women have a common denominator: love. This is what has prompted them to leave their countries of origin in search of better horizons in a new environment. These stories will be an inspiring lever for more women, whether young, teenage or adult, to continue enriching their "journey of the soul". Book Latinos in New England

Download or read book Latinos in New England written by Andres Torres and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 2006-07-15 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than one million Latinos now live in New England. This is the first book to examine their impact on the region's culture, politics, and economics. At the same time, it investigates the effects of the locale on Latino residents' lives, traditions, and institutions.Employing methodologies from a variety of disciplines, twenty-one contributors explore topics in three broad areas: demographic trends, migration and community formation, and identity and politics. They utilize a wide range of approaches, including oral histories, case studies, ethnographic inquiries, focus group research, surveys, and statistical analyses. From the "Dominicanization" of the Latino community in Waterbury, Connecticut, to the immigration experiences of Brazilians in Massachusetts, from the influence of Latino Catholics on New England's Catholic churches to the growth of a Latino community in Providence, Rhode Island, the essays included here contribute to a new and multifaceted view of the growing Pan-Latino presence in the birthplace of the United States.

Book Latino Student Success Pilot at Rhode Island College

Download or read book Latino Student Success Pilot at Rhode Island College written by Brandon C. Martinez and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latinos, a growing population on U.S. college campuses, historically have had lower college enrollment and four-year degree-attainment rates than other racial/ethnic groups. The Latino Student Success Pilot (LSSP) is a novel program designed to support first-generation low-income students of Latino origins at Rhode Island College (RIC)--an institution ranked in the top ten in the nation for closing the gap between White and Latino graduation rates. This report, based on a mixed-methods study funded by Lumina Foundation, examines the successes and challenges of RIC's LSSP program. We hope the recommendations will also inspire other institutions of higher education to consider integration and retention strategies for an increasingly diverse student body.
