Eight of the errors in Boston's column were made inthe third inning; Maguire's were bad throws. Clarkson did what no other pitcher has been able to do; he struck Maguire out. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin School Register, Vol. 29: November 1909 But to get to the story. About dusk one evening, I chanced to be lying on the shore near the old wreck, wondering what good Robinson Crusoe would have done had he been born and bred on a clam, as I had been. And while I was wondering and speculating upon this important theme, the strange voices began their doleful tune of A dozen dead sailors on Davy Jones' locker, but much louder and in much quicker time than I had ever heard them before. I marveled at this, for it happened that the tide was at ebb, and there was scarcely any wind at all. Yet the voices kept growing louder and louder they were roaring soon, - and then, suddenly, they came to a dead stop, and an ominous silence followed. This was so unusual, so very strange, indeed, that I began to feel uneasy. I looked out to sea. There the little lighthouse was winking and blinking as steadily as ever. Headquarters of the firm at Santa F . With a dav before me I sauntered idly about the town. It was-ah exact fac-simile of every other Arizona town I had visited, with its store, where the mail was delivered, its dusty green or Open area of sand, around which were grouped the main buildings of the settle ment, the small court-house, the still smaller station. The heat of the August sun was powerful', - and Arizona heat is indeed terrific The very air seemed to burn, and the parched plain, stretching afar in the distance, was like the top of a hot stove, from which the fumes of torrid warmth quivered up into the air. The sky was cloudless, blue, vast. Not a speck could be seen except some distant vul ture, sailing out of human vision in burning space. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin School Register, Vol. 57: Boston Latin School; March 1938 In the first place, the Latin School student goes through a certain routine every day. Even so, his life is not monotonous and humdrum. For instance, every week day, he arises at seven o'clock in the morning (or seven-thirty, or eight), washes, eats his breakfast, packs his books, and arrives in school at eight-thirty (or nine, or nine-thirty). Let us pass Over the next painful five and a half hours, as they are particularly systematized. At any rate, the student is out of class at two-thirty, packs his books, engages in the usual small-talk, and leaves at two-forty. Arriving home, he enjoys some form of recreation for an hour. He does an hour's home work before eating, returns to homework, finishes up, and goes to bed as soon as possible - perhaps at ten - thirty or eleven o'clock. Let us now take up the system from nine to two-thirty. Did we say that he finishes his homework at night? That was wrong. In the majority of cases, his Latin is done before school (if he can get in early enough to join in the huddle), and some other home lesson in the study and home-room periods; that is, if he can write fast enough. Most numerous of all are the formulas for fixing up what he has not the time to do, and almost equal in number are the systems for applying these formulas. In fact, so numerous are they that we are unable in this short article to cite them specifically. But there is a system for evading homework, for evading misdemeanor marks received for evading homework, for evading teachers in order to evade the marks, and so forth. Like the brook, we could go on forever in this tale of evasion. These systems are so natural, albeit they do reduce life to a routine, that a boy can and does follow them without thinking about them. He does not say to him self, What shall I do next? He goes ahead and does it. Thus, his mind is more free to devote his thinking to the important matters of his subjects. Too, the routine is well broken up by variations one encounters in study. One day he must learn one thing, next day he must learn another; one day he finds a new thought, the day after, another new thought. He is forever encountering novelties (in the way of human actions, perhaps!) in the hours that he attends classes, and he enjoys himself in the recess - and lunch - periods. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latin School Register, Vol. 8: September, 1888 The Latin School Battalion, taken as a whole, has always been one of the best in the School Regiment. It is, perhaps. Natural that such should be the case. The course of study is longer in our school than in any of the others, and most of the pupils begin drill when they enter, (usually as high privates in one of the pony companies), and continue in the battalion through the entire six years. The members of the bat talion must be at least thirteen years old, and free from any physical defect that would prevent them from carrying a musket or from marching. (lighter guns are used in the smaller companies than in the larger ones.) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin School Register, Vol. 53: November, 1933 The register, of course, is a chattel of Latin School. It is governed, completely and irrevocably, by the school. And the latter, after the manner of owners of property, is likely to become a trifle too sure of its possession. It is apt to take it too much for granted - to such an extent, that it almost completely overlooks it, and continues to rely on the force that has kept the paper going thus far, to maintain it further. The thought process mav be something like this: Oh, yes, the school magazine; it comes out once a month' sometimes good, sometimes not so good; sure, all schools have papers. Have you ever thought how that school paper must be put to gether? A paper does not come that way, you know. Each month it must be built up, gradually, painstakingly. And for material (the material that many think just exists) we must use - what you give us. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin School Register, Vol. 8: April, 1889 In a former issue of the latin school register there was published the outline of a scheme adopted by the class of '84 for the encouragement of athletics. No mention was made of the motive that led the class to act as they did, and it may be asked why the funds raised should have been devoted to athletics rather than to the library, to literary prizes, or to the further promotion of scholarship. All of these questions were raised at the annual dinner, and promptly answered. The argument that led to the unanimous adoption of the present plan was in substance as fol lows. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latin School Register, Vol. 39: December, 1919 In spite of this Latin had by far the better of the argument. In three of the four periods Latin had the ball twice in scoring position and in the last period, under the excellent generalship of Camp bell, was advancing steadily towards the E. H. S. Goal by means of rushing and the throwing of two forward passes, so that when the final whistle blew, it was Latin's ball on English's 15-yard line. At no time did English have the ball in scoring position. The nearest it came to Latin's goal was the 40-yard line.
