Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin Pronunciation and the Latin Alphabet Within the last twenty or thirty years great progress has been made in the dominion of language as well as in all the departments of the arts and sciences. Before this time, the classical languages were a separate branch of study and of learned investigation, but by the efforts of Prof. F. Bopp and his school, they are now acknowledged to be members of one large family, the organic forms of which mutually supply and explain each other. Most idioms of Italy, even, are shown to be members of one common stock, by the important labors of Aufrecht, Kirchhoff, Mommsen, and other learned men, and the Latin itself, far from being any longer regarded as a mere mongrel composition of Greek and barbarian elements, is now universally admitted, by the learned, to be of the same independent growth among the other Italic dialects, as the Hebrew among the Semitic. Highly important results, moreover, have been attained by the critical examination of Latin texts made by Ritschl, Lachmann, Fleckeisen, and others, while floods of light have been shed on the whole history of the development of the Latin language, by the investigations of Diez, Fuchs, and other philologists, who, starting with the Latin in the latest stages of its existence, have traced from it the beginnings of the modern Romance tongues. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Latin Pronunciation: For the Use of Students in Language, Law, Medicine, Zoology, Botany, and the Sciences Generally in Which Latin Words Are Used The use of letters is to preserve vocal sounds, and, as it were, return the deposit to the reader: therefore they should express what we have to say. In making some inquiries into the phonetic peculiarities of the aboriginal languages of North America, I found myself at a loss, from the want of an alphabet in which to record my results, those of Europe being more or less corrupt; and finding the statements respecting the Latin alphabet to a certain extent contradictory and unsatisfactory, I resolved to investigate it, with the intention of using it strictly according to its Latin signification, as far as this could be ascertained. This special inquiry being made, a view of the results is here presented. Pronunciation is the basis of philology, and without a knowledge of it, in examining the various writings likely to be used for philological purposes, little progress can be made in this science. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin Pronunciation: A Brief Outline of the Roman, Continental, and English Methods The character and arrangement of the studies in Eng lish and Comparative Philology at Lafayette College make it desirable that students should have a knowledge of both the Roman and the English methods. The students are carefully taught in practice to use the English method, and to give the rules for the sound of the letters, this having been found a valuable aid in teaching English Pronunci ation and the Philology of the English language. A knowl edge of the Roman method, giving the sounds, in the main, as we believe Cicero and Virgil gave them, is re quired, as a matter Of historical information and culture, and as an important aid in determining the derivations Of words and the laws of phonetic change, and in illustrating the principles Of Comparative Philology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin Pronunciation: A Short Exposition of the Roman Method This short manual is primarily intended for those who, being interested in the study of Latin, have accepted the Roman method of pronunciation upon the authority of the Grammars, but have either not been able to command the time to make themselves familiar with the arguments upon which this system is based, or have been repelled by the technicalities employed in treating the question from the standpoint of the specialist. It is believed that the following pages will be found to give in simple form the main facts bearing upon this interesting question; and that nothing has been introduced that is either unnecessary or obscure. For those who may wish to pursue their investigations farther after mastering these facts, a bibliography of the subject is given at the end. Download or read book Quantity and Accent in the Pronunciation of Latin Classic Reprint written by F. W. Westaway and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quantity and Accent in the Pronunciation of Latin The correspondence in The Times during the past year makes it clear that we have still with us a remnant of that older race of classical scholars who were ever clamant to be let alone in their easy-going pronunciation of Latin. Yet it was their custom to pride themselves upon their accuracy, and if anyone in their hearing failed to pronounce such words as antiquus, amicus, fortuna, or imperator, with the accent on the long vowel of the penult, or tarditas, trepidus, erimis, or paries, with the accent on the antepenult, the offending person was promptly cast without the pale. They seemed to be curiously unconscious of their own amazing blunders; they would shorten the long vowels in all such words as sol, non, vox, nil, lex, lectus, rex, rectum; they would lengthen the short vowel in the accented syllable of nota, rosa, toga, volens, bene, deus, bonus, socius, hieme, societas; they frequently accented the antepenult instead of the penult in minister, facultas, libertas, excellens; and so with many other analogous words. And if they made use of the phrases bona fide or sine qua non, fide was made to rime with "tidy," and sine with "briny."
