Book A Philological Introduction to Greek and Latin

Download or read book A Philological Introduction to Greek and Latin written by Ferdinand Baur and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Philological Introduction to Greek and Latin: For Students The translators of the following little treatise have simply endeavoured to put Professor Baur's ideas before English students. The only liberty they have taken is that of breaking up the German sentences, and thus in some degree making the work less difficult than the original, although it has not even now the doubtful merit of easiness. English equivalents are given for Greek and Latin words wherever Professor Baur has given German renderings. The translators' best thanks are due to the Rev. A. H. Sayce and the Rev. G. W. Cox for many valuable suggestions while the work was passing through the press. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Primer of Classical and English Philology Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Primer of Classical and English Philology Classic Reprint written by Walter W. Skeat and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Primer of Classical and English Philology The object of the present little book is to exhibit some of the more elementary principles of modern philology as applied to the etymology of Greek, Latin, and English words. In Chapter I, I give the principal points that concern the proper pronunciation of Greek and Latin. For the pronunciation of Anglo-Saxon, the student is referred to Sweet's Anglo-Saxon Primer. In Chapter II, I show how Greek is usually transliterated, whenever Latin or English words are borrowed from that language. I next state a few laws that govern the combination of letters in Greek; and note the chief vowel-changes in Latin arising from the prefixing of prepositions to verbs. In Chapter III, I explain what is meant by 'cognate'; with some examples of Grimm's Law as applied to cognate words in Greek, Latin, and English. In Chapter IV, I note some characteristics of Greek and Latin that are exemplified at every turn when it is desired to compare them with English. The remaining Chapters are wholly occupied with an exemplification of the principles of gradation; because without a sound knowledge of such principles it is impossible to compare the vowel-sounds in the three languages (Greek, Latin, and English); and until such vowel-changes are rightly understood, no true comparison of cognate words can he made. Book A Catalogue of Greek and Latin Classics

Download or read book A Catalogue of Greek and Latin Classics written by Bernard Quaritch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Catalogue of Greek and Latin Classics: Also of Modern Latinists, and of Works Upon Classical Philology, Greek and Roman Archaeology, and History Englishmen, Frenchmen, Germans, Italians, and Spaniards, are of course primarily interested in the study of their own languages and literatures; but no educated man in Christendom will hesitate to declare that the study of Greek and Latin is of the next importance. It is hardly worth while to discuss the views of the people who - especially in England - seek to decry the educational value of the classics, and who would dismiss them from the place of honour in our schools. All modern literatures, like a great many modern institutions, are framed upon a Greek or greeco-roman plan. The canons of taste which the Greeks invented and the Romans accepted, have never ceased to guide and control literary composition in all the vernacular tongues. Consciously or unconsciously, the poet, the historian, the philosopher, has measured his own excellence by a comparison with the work of ancient writers; and the form in which his thoughts have taken shape has been borrowed, with little modification, from the models set by the Greeks. To the Romans, with whom our connexion was immediate, we Owe the rudiments of that education, and a large residuum of Roman ideas and Latin phrases in our modern tongues has rendered a knowledge of the Latin language indispensable for research into the history of any portion of our national life and culture. This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Comparative Philology as Applied to the Illustration of Greek and Latin Inflections This book contains the substance of lectures delivered at Oxford in 1874 and 1875 to candidates for Honours in Classics at the First Public Examination, upon the prescribed subject Of 'the Elements of Comparative Philology as applied to the illustration of Greek and Latin In ections, ' and therefore does not profess to deal with more than a very limited portion of the wide field covered by the Science of Language. In the course of my lectures I was often met by the difficulty of recommending to pupils any English text-book that would give them in a compact and accessible form the means of preparing the subject for themselves 1; and I had hoped that the want thus felt might have been supplied for our students by the Oxford Professor of Comparative Philology. So long as there was any prospect of help from that quarter, it would have been pre sumptuous in me to come forward. But Professor Max Muller was unable to spare time from more important labours; and the preparation of this Manual was perforce entrusted to very inferior hands. Book The Study of Latin in the Preparatory Course Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Study of Latin in the Preparatory Course Classic Reprint written by Edward Parmelee Morris and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of Latin in the Preparatory Course The reason for passing them over is a twofold one: first, because they have been often and fully presented, and, second, because any discussion of the college work brings in at once the question of elective studies, - a question upon which the writer had no warrant for entering. On the other hand, a statement of the meaning and purposes of Latin philology, and of the extent to which it has, without conscious choice on the part of teachers, made its way into the preparatory course, may not be without value. That is the purpose of this essay, - to show that Latin philology has a place in the definition of the study of Latin, and the title has therefore been changed to express this purpose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard Studies in Classical Philology, Vol. 10 In view of these principles, when we find the long words which are so characteristic of Latin, the natural presumption is that (apart from obvious composition) the words have been built up by continu ous further formation by means of the living elements existing in the language, and unless some controlling reason appears to the contrary, this presumption is to be taken as true. As the suffixes are for the most part of pronominal origin we must, in analyzing a word, take off successively from the end the recognizable suffixes and discover the stems or the various steps through which the word has passed in its further formation.
