Book The Love of Nature Among the Romans

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Love of Nature Among the Romans: During the Later Decades of the Republic, and the First Century of the Empire The publication of this volume by an author who has spent a long life in the active prosecution of Science may need a few words of explanation. Let me at once disclaim any pretension to classical scholarship. I can only say that, in the midst of wholly different pursuits, I have never lost the taste for those classical studies which were a joy to me in youth, but which since then have been taken up only fitfully and at long intervals, as a restful refreshment. Two years ago, induced by the representations of my lamented friend the late Samuel Henry Butcher, I accepted the Presidency of the Classical Association, and had, as the main duty of my year of office, to deliver an Address in January 1911. I chose a subject which seemed in some measure to combine the classical interests of the members with my own deep love of Nature. Book A History of Latin Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Latin Literature Classic Reprint written by Marcus Southwell Dimsdale and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Latin Literature The vast progress made in all departments of literary scholarship, and the minuteness with which knowledge is now subdivided, threaten to leave the general reader bewildered at the diversity and bulk of what is presented to him. The exact historian of literature concentrates his attention on so narrow a field that he cannot be expected to appeal to a wide class; those who study what he writes are, or must in some measure grow to be, his fellow-specialists. But the more precisely each little area is surveyed in detail, the more necessary does it become for us to return at frequent intervals to an inspection of the general scheme of which each topographical study is but a fragment magnified. It has seemed that of late the minute treatment of a multitude of intellectual phenomena has a little tended to obscure the general movement of literature in each race or country. In a crowd of handbooks, each of high authority in itself, the general trend of influence or thread of evolution may be lost. Book Latin Historical Inscriptions

Download or read book Latin Historical Inscriptions written by Gordon McNeil Rushforth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin Historical Inscriptions: Illustrating the History of the Early Empire The greater part of the inscriptions are taken from the Corpus and reproduce the text there given with small modifications, such as the occasional omission of frag mentary lines or letters which would only confuse the learner and add nothing to the historical information. The appearance of the inscriptions in the Corpus has also been imitated as far as possible by the use of capitals, but it must be remembered that the representations are only approximate and must not be thought of as facsimiles of the originals. The longer documents have been printed in ordinary type, the arrangement of the lines in the original being preseed in order to facilitate reference. The inscriptions are supplemented by a certain number of coins. The text is that of Cohen, and the reference to Eckhel has been added where the coin was described by him. Book Greek and Latin Literature of the Roman Empire

Download or read book Greek and Latin Literature of the Roman Empire written by Albrecht Dihle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Dihle sees the Greek and Latin literature between the 1st century B.C. and the 6th century A.D. as an organic progression. He builds on Schlegel's observation that art, customs and political life in classical antiquity are inextricably entwined and therefore should not be examined separately. Dihle does not simply consider narrowly defined `literature', but all works of cultural socio-historical significance, including Jewish and Christian literature, philosophy and science. Despite this, major authors like Seneca, Tacitus and Plotinus are considered individually. This work is an authoritative yet personal presentation of seven hundred years of literature.
