Book Latin and Greek Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book Latin and Greek Verse Classic Reprint written by Thomas Saunders Evans and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin and Greek Verse This volume is published in compliance with a wish very warmly expressed by numerous friends and admirers of Professor Evans. Those who are more immediately responsible for its issue have been actuated, independently of this external appeal, by an affectionate desire to furnish a memorial of an original and highly gifted man, considered by many to have few rivals in his special department of scholarship. They venture also to hope that it may exercise some reinvigorating influence upon a branch of scholarship which has flourished in this country in the past, but is at present, in the opinion of some competent judges, exhibiting unmistakable symptoms of decay. The compositions now given to the public are only a portion of a much larger number found amongst Professor Evans's papers. Many of those that are withheld well merit publication. Book English Translations from the Greek A Bibliographical Survey

Download or read book English Translations from the Greek A Bibliographical Survey written by Finley Melville Kendall Foster and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-06-02 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originating from a study of the people's attitude in the first thirty years of the nineteenth century toward the classics, English Translations from the Greek by Finley Melville Kendall Foster lists the significant translations published during those years. In order to have the necessary material for a close study of the original list, extensive research was conducted for around fifty years. The result of these discoveries is embodied in the list of translations that make up this book's contents. Foster hopes to educate people about and make them familiar with the various kinds of Greek literature that have been popular at different times during the last four hundred and thirty years. He has in no way attempted to discuss the standards or the benchmarks of a good translation, the reason being that the making of an English version of a Greek original presents difficulties little distinct from those of translation from any other language into English.

Book Exercises in Translation From English Poetry Into Greek and Latin Verse

Download or read book Exercises in Translation From English Poetry Into Greek and Latin Verse written by Henry Hayman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exercises in Translation From English Poetry Into Greek and Latin Verse: Greek Epic Hexameters; Greek Iambics; Latin Elegiacs; Latin Hexameters; Latin Lyrics In spite of the superiority of prose translation - or, as it is technically called, "composition" - as a vehicle for training the mind in. preciseness of expression, it is likely that corresponding exercises in. verse will remain chief favourites in the classical paloestra with those who love such things in and for themselves, irrespectively of the results to which they may lead. But without attempting to settle the respective claims of the departments of prose and verse translation in literis humanioribus - which, indeed, would require the decision of the previous question, what share the ideal should exercise in education - it may be conceded that, at any rate, next to accuracy felicity, and symmetry, and even elegance of expression, are worth cultivating; and also, I think, that they are best cultivated by a course of training, in which they distinctively hold the foremost place. This only relates to exercises where the mind is called upon to clothe with language ideas external to itself, and therefore does not include original versification, with which we have at present no concern. Book excerpt: Great Britain has a long and grand tradition of poets translating classical authors. This unique anthology presents the best of these translations, ranging from King Alfred, Alexander Pope, and Ben Jonson, to Alfred Lord Tennyson, Ezra Pound, and Ted Hughes. The book offers a vast array of responses to the song, verse, and drama of ancient Greece and Rome, and to poets themselves as varied as Homer, Sappho, Euripides, Virgil, Ovid, and Juvenal. Organized by classical author and text, the book gathers and juxtaposes English versions, sometimes of the same passage or poem, to dramatize the endless renewal of one great poetic tradition in and through another.
