Book The Foreign Powers in Latin America

Download or read book The Foreign Powers in Latin America written by Herbert Goldhamer and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our preoccupation with the role of the United States in Latin American affairs has obscured the important part played by Canada and the nonhemispheric nations, e.g., the Soviet Union, Japan, and Israel. To compensate for this neglect, Herbert Goldhamer examines the interests and activities of the foreign powers in Latin America, focusing on the decade of the Alliance for Progress (1961-1971). Adopting an analytical and topical rather than a country-by-country approach, Mr. Goldhamer presents a comparative picture of the foreign powers' objectives (territorial, national security, economic, political) and of the means and resources (the migrant presence, affinities, advocacy, models, cultural programs, aid, diplomacy) they have used in pursuit of these ends. In conclusion he evaluates the extent to which they have achieved their ends and sets forth the principles of interstate behavior—and the lessons in statecraft these principles suggest—that seem to have been involved. Originally published in 1972. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. Book excerpt: Comparing Ethnographies presents cross-national comparisons that give researchers and students a fresh look at familiar concepts. How does it matter, for example, to think in terms of "majorities" rather than "minorities, "migrants" rather than "immigrants, or"intercultural education" rather than "multicultural education"? How does indigenous education or the work of teachers look different to ethnographers from differnt countries of the Americas? This engaging new volume edited by Kathryn Anderson-Levitt and Elsie Rockwell includes essays from experts throughout the Americas which help readers understand and learn from ethnographic educational research conducted across the Western Hemisphere, and also includes a practical guide to finding the relevant literature.

Book Latin America Confronts the United States

Download or read book Latin America Confronts the United States written by Tom Long and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin America Confronts the United States offers a new perspective on US-Latin America relations. Drawing on research in six countries, the book examines how Latin American leaders are able to overcome power asymmetries to influence US foreign policy. The book provides in-depth explorations of key moments in post-World War II inter-American relations - foreign economic policy before the Alliance for Progress, the negotiation of the Panama Canal Treaties, the expansion of trade through the North American Free Trade Agreement, and the growth of counternarcotics in Plan Colombia. The new evidence challenges earlier, US-centric explanations of these momentous events. Though differences in power were fundamental to each of these cases, relative weakness did not prevent Latin American leaders from aggressively pursuing their interests vis-à-vis the United States. Drawing on studies of foreign policy and international relations, the book examines how Latin American leaders achieved this influence - and why they sometimes failed.
