Download or read book Single Piles and Pile Groups Under Lateral Loading written by Lymon C. Reese and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-12-15 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complexities of designing piles for lateral loads are manifold as there are many forces that are critical to the design of big structures such as bridges, offshore and waterfront structures and retaining walls. The loads on structures should be supported either horizontally or laterally or in both directions and most structures have in common t

Book Advanced Design of Pile Foundations Under Lateral Loading

Download or read book Advanced Design of Pile Foundations Under Lateral Loading written by Wei Dong Guo and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-12-15 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents models that capture the nonlinear response of piles subjected to lateral forces. Utilising a consistent approach encompassing new mathematical models, it offers solutions presented as closed-form expressions and underpinned by the same set of 3-5 measurable soil-input parameters. These focus on nonlinear response of mono piles, anchored piles, pile groups, and torsional piles, as well as passive piles subjected to soil movement induced in shearing, sliding slopes or excavation, and earthquake shaking. The models can also be used for pipelines and similar beam structures. Solutions are provided in the form of design charts, with each parameter obtained using available test data and illustrated with real-world cases. The models reveal, for the first time, the mysterious mechanisms of amplification resulting from back-rotation, which have incurred the collapse of structures such as the Showa Bridge and Nicoll Highway, as well as the distortion of piles during earthquakes. Advanced Design of Pile Foundations Under Lateral Loading is ideal for practicing foundation engineers and students at graduate level. Wei Dong Guo is co-founder of Hans Innovation Group and former Associate Professor at the University of Wollongong, Australia. He is a Chartered Professional Engineer and is a Fellow of Engineers Australia by whom he was awarded the 2012 Warren Medal.

Book Guidelines for Design of Low Rise Buildings Subjected to Lateral Forces

Download or read book Guidelines for Design of Low Rise Buildings Subjected to Lateral Forces written by Ajaya Kumar Gupta and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-11-25 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guidelines for Design of Low-Rise Buildings Subjected to Lateral Forces is a concise guide that identifies performance issues, concerns, and research needs associated with low-rise buildings. The book begins with an introduction that discusses special problems with low-rise buildings subjected to wind and earthquakes. Chapter 2 examines probabilistic methods and their use in evaluating risks from natural hazards. It also addresses the characteristics of wind and seismic forces and levels of risk implied by building codes. Wind forces are covered in more detail in Chapter 3, with discussions of wind force concepts and wind-structure interactions. Chapter 4 is devoted to earthquake forces and traces the development of building codes for earthquake resistant design. Chapter 5 describes the main framing systems used to resist lateral forces and discusses the code requirements for drift control. The designs and requirements for connections between building elements are addressed in Chapter 6. It includes examples along with several illustrations of suitable connections. The performance of non-structural elements during wind and earthquake forces is also examined in detail. This book serves as an important reference for civil engineers, construction engineers, architects, and anyone concerned with structural codes and standards. It is an excellent guide that can be used to supplement design recommendations and provide a design basis where there are no current requirements.

Book excerpt: Construction Details From Architectural Graphic Standards Eighth Edition Edited by James Ambrose A concise reference tool for the professional involved in the production of details for building construction, this abridgement of the classic Architectural Graphic Standards provides indispensable guidance on standardizing detail work, without having to create the needed details from scratch. An ideal "how to" manual for the working draftsperson, this convenient, portable edition covers general planning and design data, sitework, concrete, masonry, metals, wood, doors and windows, finishes, specialties, equipment, furnishings, special construction, energy design, historic preservation, and more. Construction Details also includes extensive references to additional information as well as AGS’s hallmark illustrations. 1991 (0 471-54899-5) 408 pp. Fundamentals of Building Construction Materials And Methods Second Edition Edward Allen "A thoughtful overview of the entire construction industry, from homes to skyscrapers…there’s plenty here for the aspiring tradesperson or anyone else who’s fascinated by the art of building." —Fine Homebuilding Beginning with the materials of the ancients—wood, stone, and brick—this important work is a guide to the structural systems that have made these and more contemporary building materials the irreplaceable basics of modern architecture. Detailing the structural systems most widely used today—heavy timber framing, wood platform framing, masonry loadbearing wall, structural steel framing, and concrete framing systems—the book describes each system’s historical development, how the major material is obtained and processed, tools and working methods, as well as each system’s relative merits. Designed as a primer to building basics, the book features a list of key terms and concepts, review questions and exercises, as well as hundreds of drawings and photographs, illustrating the materials and methods described. 1990 (0 471-50911-6) 803 pp. Mechanical and Electrical Equipment for Buildings Eighth Edition Benjamin Stein and John S. Reynolds "The book is packed with useful information and has been the architect’s standard for fifty years." —Electrical Engineering and Electronics on the seventh edition More up to date than ever, this reference classic provides valuable insights on the new imperatives for building design today. The Eighth Edition details the impact of computers, data processing, and telecommunications on building system design; the effects of new, stringent energy codes on building systems; and computer calculation techniques as applied to daylighting and electric lighting design. As did earlier editions, the book provides the basic theory and design guidelines for both systems and equipment, in everything from heating and cooling, water and waste, fire and fire protection systems, lighting and electrical wiring, plumbing, elevators and escalators, acoustics, and more. Thoroughly illustrated, the book is a basic primer on making comfort and resource efficiency integral to the design standard. 1991 (0 471-52502-2) 1,664 pp.

Book Design of Pile Foundations in Liquefiable Soils

Download or read book Design of Pile Foundations in Liquefiable Soils written by Gopal Madabhushi and published by Imperial College Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pile foundations are the most common form of deep foundations that are used both onshore and offshore to transfer large superstructural loads into competent soil strata. This book provides many case histories of failure of pile foundations due to earthquake loading and soil liquefaction. Based on the observed case histories, the possible mechanisms of failure of the pile foundations are postulated. The book also deals with the additional loading attracted by piles in liquefiable soils due to lateral spreading of sloping ground. Recent research at Cambridge forms the backbone of this book with the design methodologies being developed directly based on quantified centrifuge test results and numerical analysis. The book provides designers and practicing civil engineers with a sound knowledge of pile behaviour in liquefiable soils and easy-to-use methods to design pile foundations in seismic regions. For graduate students and researchers, it brings together the latest research findings on pile foundations in a way that is relevant to geotechnical practice. Sample Chapter(s). Foreword (85 KB). Chapter 1: Performance of Pile Foundations (4,832 KB). Contents: Performance of Pile Foundations; Inertial and Kinematic Loading; Accounting for Axial Loading in Level Ground; Lateral Spreading of Sloping Ground; Axial Loading on Piles in Laterally Spreading Ground; Design Examples. Readership: Researchers, academics, designers and graduate students in earthquake engineering, civil engineering and ocean/coastal engineering.
