Download or read book The Humane Gardener written by Nancy Lawson and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2017-04-18 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this eloquent plea for compassion and respect for all species, journalist and gardener Nancy Lawson describes why and how to welcome wildlife to our backyards. Through engaging anecdotes and inspired advice, profiles of home gardeners throughout the country, and interviews with scientists and horticulturalists, Lawson applies the broader lessons of ecology to our own outdoor spaces. Detailed chapters address planting for wildlife by choosing native species; providing habitats that shelter baby animals, as well as birds, bees, and butterflies; creating safe zones in the garden; cohabiting with creatures often regarded as pests; letting nature be your garden designer; and encouraging natural processes and evolution in the garden. The Humane Gardener fills a unique niche in describing simple principles for both attracting wildlife and peacefully resolving conflicts with all the creatures that share our world.
Download or read book A Pile of Leaves written by Jason Fulford and published by Phaidon Press. This book was released on 2018-09-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dig through the leaf pile in this collage-inspired book with see-through pages Readers explore the concept of layering and collage with this interactive exercise in composition. Each clear acetate page features a single element in the leaf pile, though some are not leaves at all! As readers turn the pages, the leaf pile is deconstructed piece by piece on the right side, and reconstructed on the left. Younger readers will enjoy the seek-and-find aspect of the hidden objects, while older readers might experiment by adding their own images between the pages. A key at the back provides the names of each kind of leaf shown. Inspired by the Whitney Museum's approach to looking at art, these books provide a new way to look at the world. Colors are brighter than they appear - printed in pure Pantones. Ages 2-4

Download or read book Dormancy and Resistance in Harsh Environments written by Esther Lubzens and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-07-30 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many organisms have evolved the ability to enter into and revive from a dormant state. They can survive for long periods in this state (often even months to years), yet can become responsive again within minutes or hours. This is often, but not necessarily, associated with desiccation. Preserving one’s body and reviving it in future generations is a dream of mankind. To date, however, we have failed to learn how cells, tissues or entire organisms can be made dormant or be effectively revived at ambient temperatures. In this book studies on organisms, ranging from aquatic cyanobacteria that produce akinetes to hibernating mammals, are presented, and reveal common but also divergent physiological and molecular pathways for surviving in a dormant form or for tolerating harsh environments. Attempting to learn the functions associated with dormancy and how they are regulated is one of the great future challenges. Its relevance to the preservation of cells and tissues is one of the key concerns of this book.

Download or read book Drought Tolerance in Higher Plants Genetical Physiological and Molecular Biological Analysis written by E. Belhassen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As drought tolerance is a multidirnensional stress, drought tolerance study is a multidisciplinary adventure. In 1992, the network INTERDROUGHT was created with the objective of joining the scientists of the different fields of research involved in drought tolerance study. The network was funded by the EEC and gathered 25 European teams specialized in molecular biology, physiology and geneties. 1\vo workshops were successively organized in 1993 in Sitges (Spain) and in 1994 in Ischia (Italy). After those two European workshops, the necessity of opening the network to the whole scientific community was already clear, and in 1995 the first INTERDROUGHT international conference was held in Montpellier (France). During this meeting, eleven speakers were invited to present a review in their field of research, in a way accessible to all researchers and students, especially those who are not familiar wlth one of the three fields of interest. These eleven reviews are presented in this book. From these reviews three major difficulties arose for drought tolerance irnprovement: - the definition of the drought stress that plants experience; -the differentiation between non adaptive and adaptive response to drought stress; -the identification of the adaptive responses that improved drought yield without decreasing significantly the potential yield. The use of integrated strategies of research will certainly provide irnportant results, such as the recent data obtained on molecular and physiologieal analysis of Arabidopsis mutants.

Download or read book Advances in Morphogenesis written by M. Abercrombie and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Morphogenesis, Volume 6 considers the significant advances in various aspects of morphogenesis. This volume is composed of seven chapters that specifically cover the biological, morphological, and embryological aspects of cell growth and development. The opening chapter deals with the classification, progression, genetic aspects, and experimental induction of teratomas. The next chapter focuses on insect morphogenesis, its formation of surface patterns, the gradient organization of the epidermis, and the three-dimensional patterns resulting from cycles of activity in time. A chapter discusses the factors that control the initiation of hemoglobin synthesis, with a particular emphasis on studies of the chick and amphibian embryo. These topics are followed by surveys on heteroblastic development in vascular plants, the ultrastructure of the nucleus, and the experimental alterations of the developmental cytogenetic mechanisms. The final chapter examines the epigenetic aspect of developments in sexual organogenesis. This book is directed primarily toward developmental biologists.
