Book A French Huguenot Legacy

Download or read book A French Huguenot Legacy written by Debra Guiou(n) Stufflebean and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-08-23 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Knights Templar to serving in the militia under George Washington, the Huguenot's have been keepers of the faith, fighters for freedom, and left their mark on history. The Huguenots were massacred in France in the 17th century when the Royals declared one king, one law, one religion. Fleeing for their lives, and for the right to worship as Protestants, many walked away from lives of nobility. Jacques Guyon settled on Staten Island; Louis Guion settled first in Rye, then New Rochelle, NY. Follow their journeys and the lives of their descendants in a true French-American saga. Of particular interest to genealogists, with a supporting appendix, especially for those families who intermarried with the Guion's.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A local historian explores the rich history of this rugged Canadian coastline with fascinating research and twenty-five historical photos. The beautiful harbours of Nova Scotia take many forms. Some are broad and studded with islands, while others are long inlets carved out by glaciers. Prized by the indigenous Mi’kmaq people as well as European settlers, they contain fascinating tales from the Age of Sail the American Revolution, the Golden Age of Piracy, and much more. Featuring profiles of more than fifty harbours—from the Bedford Basin to Shelburne Harbour to Cobequid Bay, Louisbourg, and Canso—Nova Scotia’s Historic Harbours explores each harbour’s historical significance. Local historian Joan Dawson shows how these communities have been shaped by the sea, and how Nova Scotia’s growth has been driven by its wealth of harbours.

Book A Great and Noble Scheme The Tragic Story of the Expulsion of the French Acadians from Their American Homeland

Download or read book A Great and Noble Scheme The Tragic Story of the Expulsion of the French Acadians from Their American Homeland written by John Mack Faragher and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2006-02-17 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Altogether superb: an accessible, fluent account that advances scholarship while building a worthy memorial to the victims of two and a half centuries past." —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) In 1755, New England troops embarked on a "great and noble scheme" to expel 18,000 French-speaking Acadians ("the neutral French") from Nova Scotia, killing thousands, separating innumerable families, and driving many into forests where they waged a desperate guerrilla resistance. The right of neutrality; to live in peace from the imperial wars waged between France and England; had been one of the founding values of Acadia; its settlers traded and intermarried freely with native Mikmaq Indians and English Protestants alike. But the Acadians' refusal to swear unconditional allegiance to the British Crown in the mid-eighteenth century gave New Englanders, who had long coveted Nova Scotia's fertile farmland, pretense enough to launch a campaign of ethnic cleansing on a massive scale. John Mack Faragher draws on original research to weave 150 years of history into a gripping narrative of both the civilization of Acadia and the British plot to destroy it.

Book Eastern and Western Perspectives

Download or read book Eastern and Western Perspectives written by David J. Bercuson and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1981-12-15 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Atlantic Canada and Western Canada Studies Conferences have focused attention in recent years on the culture and development of two widely separated regions which have been frequently ignored in studies of the Canadian nation. The Atlantic Canada Studies Conference, meeting in 1974 and 1976 at the University of New Brunswick, and the Western Canadian Studies Conference, meeting annually since 1968 at the University of Calgary, have brought together scholars from a variety of disciplines to study the identities and characteristics of these two hinterlands. In 1978 the two conferences met jointly, in a session in Fredericton and one at Calgary with a core of speakers and papers common to both. The purpose was to compare and contrast subjects and experiences of interest and concern in the west and in Atlantic Canada. The ten papers which comprise Eastern and Western Perspectives are selected from twenty-seven presented at the joint conference. The topic chosen not only illustrate some of the preoccupations of regional historians and political scientists, but also echo many of the concerns of Canadians in general. The plight of islands and francophone culture in the midst of an overwhelmingly Anglo-American society, the search for identities in the face of persisting stereotypes, the effects of economic and urban development, the distinctiveness of local political cultures—all are subjects whose study enriches both regional and national history. This volume brings together explorations of these themes from eastern and western points of view and makes a unique contribution to a greater understanding and awareness of the regional dimension in Canadian life.
