Wuditu and her family risk their lives to make this journey, which leads them to a refugee camp in Sudan, where they are separated. Terrified, 15-year-old Wuditu must return to Ethiopia alone. “Don’t give up, Wuditu! Be strong!” The words of her little sister come to Wuditu in a dream and give her the courage to keep going. Wuditu must find someone to give her food and shelter or she will surely die. Finally Wuditu is offered a solution: working as a servant. However, she quickly realizes that she has become a slave. With nowhere else to go, she stays — until the villagers discover that she is a falasha, a hated Jew. Only her dream of one day being reunited with her family gives her strength — until the arrival of a stranger heralds hope and a new life in Israel. Based on real events, Wuditu’s story mirrors the experiences of thousands of Ethiopian Jews.

Book excerpt: In a land where status defines a person’s entire life, a young man struggles to find his place among those who reject his differences. Too royal for piracy but too savage for palace halls, he doesn’t fit anywhere. It’s practically impossible to meet everyone’s lofty expectations when they all want nothing more than for him to fail. If only someone would give him a chance to prove his worth. Left behind in Sehaann and seething with bitterness, Oron is an outcast in his own land. All he wants is to be back with his pirate brethren and enjoying an adventure. Instead, he’s deeply mired in complex politics, stuffy etiquette, and the resentment of his peers. He’s stuck in hell, and he doesn’t know if he’ll ever get out. Deven is the most promising fighter among the top squires training to become Knights of Sehaann. His future is well-defined, his career as a royal protector assured. Though he wasn’t counting on being entrusted with such responsibility before earning his knighthood, he accepts it gladly in order to keep his prince and new friend safe. A young prince turned pirate who was never meant to rule. A squire destined to be a knight who will do anything for honor and friendship. Together, they will face every challenge and fight every battle with courage. It will take more than courage and honor, though, to win their toughest battle. Book Touts

    Book Details:
  • Author : Enrique Martino
  • Publisher : Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
  • Release : 2022-08-22
  • ISBN : 3110755920
  • Pages : 286 pages

Download or read book Touts written by Enrique Martino and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-08-22 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Touts is a historical account of the troubled formation of a colonial labor market in the Gulf of Guinea and a major contribution to the historiography of indentured labor, which has relatively few reference points in Africa. The setting is West Africa’s largest island, Fernando Po or Bioko in today’s Equatorial Guinea, 100 kilometers off the coast of Nigeria. The Spanish ruled this often-ignored island from the mid-nineteenth century until 1968. A booming plantation economy led to the arrival of several hundred thousand West African, principally Nigerian, contract workers on steamships and canoes. In Touts, Enrique Martino traces the confusing transition from slavery to other labor regimes, paying particular attention to the labor brokers and their financial, logistical, and clandestine techniques for bringing workers to the island. Martino combines multi-sited archival research with the concept of touts as "lumpen-brokers" to offer a detailed study of how commercial labor relations could develop, shift and collapse through the recruiters’ own techniques, such as large wage advances and elaborate deceptions. The result is a pathbreaking reconnection of labor mobility, contract law, informal credit structures and exchange practices in African history.

Book Educational Policy and the Mission Schools

Download or read book Educational Policy and the Mission Schools written by Brian Holmes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published 1967, this title reveals how the missionaries, so often misguided and short-sighted, were in fact pioneers of modernization, science and freedom. The structure of the book allows for comparative analysis and the volume illustrates how some of the social consequences of action through the schools could be foreseen. In addition light is thrown on the results of Imperial rule during the nineteenth century and on the nature of the impact of Western education in Asia and Africa.
