Book Homesick and Happy

Download or read book Homesick and Happy written by Michael Thompson and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An insightful and powerful look at the magic of summer camp—and why it is so important for children to be away from home . . . if only for a little while. In an age when it’s the rare child who walks to school on his own, the thought of sending your “little ones” off to sleep-away camp can be overwhelming—for you and for them. But parents’ first instinct—to shelter their offspring above all else—is actually depriving kids of the major developmental milestones that occur through letting them go—and watching them come back transformed. In Homesick and Happy, renowned child psychologist Michael Thompson, PhD, shares a strong argument for, and a vital guide to, this brief loosening of ties. A great champion of summer camp, he explains how camp ushers your children into a thrilling world offering an environment that most of us at home cannot: an electronics-free zone, a multigenerational community, meaningful daily rituals like group meals and cabin clean-up, and a place where time simply slows down. In the buggy woods, icy swims, campfire sing-alongs, and daring adventures, children have emotionally significant and character-building experiences; they often grow in ways that surprise even themselves; they make lifelong memories and cherished friends. Thompson shows how children who are away from their parents can be both homesick and happy, scared and successful, anxious and exuberant. When kids go to camp—for a week, a month, or the whole summer—they can experience some of the greatest maturation of their lives, and return more independent, strong, and healthy.

Book excerpt: The editors of Texas Monthly explore what it means to be a Texan in this anthology packed with essays, reportage, recipes, and recommendations from their renowned list of contributors. Big hats, big trucks, big oil fortunes—Texas clichés all. And while those elements do flourish throughout Texas, they alone hardly define the place. The Lone Star State is and has always been a great melting pot, home to sprawling cities, trailblazing innovators, and treasured traditions from all over, many of which become ingrained in popular culture and intertwined with the American ideal. In this collection, the editors of Texas Monthly take stock of their multifaceted, larger-than-life state, including the people, customs, land, culture, and cuisine that have collided and comingled here. Featuring essays, reportage, recipes, and recommendations from the magazine’s legendary roster of contributors, and accompanied by original drawings, Being Texan explores the landscapes that are home to more than 29 million people; the joys and idiosyncrasies of Texan life; underappreciated episodes of Texas history; and distinctive strains of Texan arts and culture. Illuminating, surprising, and entertaining, Being Texan reveals the Lone Star State in all its beauty, vastness, and complexity.

Book Sontag and the Camp Aesthetic

Download or read book Sontag and the Camp Aesthetic written by Bruce E. Drushel and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2017-02-15 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sontag and the Camp Aesthetic: Advancing New Perspectives marks 50 years of writing and cultural production on the phenomenon of camp since Susan Sontag’s 1964 cornerstone essay “Notes on ‘Camp’.” It provides cutting-edge theory and understanding on ways to read and interpret camp through a collection of essays from historical, theoretical, and cultural perspectives. It includes varied subject areas including camp icons, stylistics periods, and important and representative texts from television, film, and literature. These essays create a scholarly conversation that understands camp as not only signifier or aesthetic but also a language, mode, and style that goes beyond its initial linguistic and semiotic guise. The contributors, representing a diverse group of established and rising scholars, explore camp as a largely queer genre that includes varying modes of understanding of desire and of the self outside a hegemonic model of heteronormativity.

Book The Complete Clarksburg Ohio World War II Guide

Download or read book The Complete Clarksburg Ohio World War II Guide written by Victor Cleary and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-01-19 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Complete Clarksburg Ohio World War II Guide is one of the country's most thorough case studies analyzing one village's involvement during WWII. Research, letters, a veteran index, and over 80 photographs highlight the service of 222 veterans from Clarksburg who served our country and details a number of experiences from training to battle. Clarksburg sent one-in-five of its residents to war when the national average was one-in-eight, and an astounding 45%% of Clarksburg's infantrymen and just over one-third of its aerial crewmembers, were either killed or wounded. Even more noteworthy was the high number of aircraft crashes suffered by Clarksburg's heavy bomber crews. Even though Clarksburg had its share of decorated soldiers, a majority of the village's veterans filled common roles. They were common men called upon every day to face uncommon responsibilities and a significant number found themselves in positions of authority and in a place to perform heroically in some of the war's fiercest battles.
