Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dazzling finale - both of the Ghorba Ghost Story Series and award-winning author Massoud Hayoun's brief career as a novelist - Darf Publishers brings you a Jewish Egyptian Wizard of Oz, radiating "crushed velour and luxury" and "sensuality, once more". Sam Saadoun, not to be confused with the gay Jewish Arab protagonist of Building 46 of the same name, had planned to spend a final night in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn with the last of many lovers. But amid their frolicking through that American immigrant enclave's Post-Soviet attractions, Sam finds himself cast back to the heart of the matter: Alexandria, Egypt in the 1930s. With the biting satire and folly of a Luis Bunuel film and the delicious melancholy of a Beach House ballad, Hayoun offers us a striking last look at the Ghorba Ghost World's longing, love, and lust as well as the political intimacies that have shaped the 21st Century Arab world and North African diaspora. This is a parting glance that is bound to haunt and delight.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was a bet. A stupid bet. One I never should have made. One I knew, that could cost me everything. To be honest, I didn't even think it would work. I kissed Patrick the night we met and he couldn't have made it clearer-he isn't into me. Not like that. He's funny and sweet and entirely too good for a girl like me. He's perfect and I'm... not. So, we're friends. Just friends. When my life falls apart and I need a place to live, Patrick comes to my rescue, no questions asked. I know it doesn't mean anything. It's just one friend, helping out another. I know that... but I can't help but want more. I can't help but want him. It's my friend, Tess, who points out that Patrick may be perfect, but he's still just a man. That if I want him, all I have to do is say so. That if I push hard enough, I can make him want me. I know she's wrong because I've felt the sting of his rejection and I have no desire to subject myself to it again... but what if she's right? What if all Patrick needs is a little push?

One of the few black kids on his Brighton Beach block, Titus "Crisp" Crespo was raised by his white mother and his Russian grandparents. He has two legacies from his absent father, Mo: his weird name and his brown skin. Crisp has always been the odd kid out, but a fundamentally good kid, with a bright future. But one impulsive decision triggers a horrible domino effect--an arrest, no reason not to accompany his richer, whiter friend Glynnie on a visit to her weed dealer, and a trip onto his father's old home turf where he'll face certain choices he's always strived to avoid. As Detective Lex Cole tries to unravel the clues from Crisp's night out, they both find that what you don't know about your past can still come back to haunt you.

Book Zainab

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mohammed Hussein Haikal
  • Publisher : Darf Publishers Ltd.
  • Release : 2016-10-02
  • ISBN : 1850772924
  • Pages : 239 pages

Download or read book Zainab written by Mohammed Hussein Haikal and published by Darf Publishers Ltd.. This book was released on 2016-10-02 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zainab, a name which aptly reflects the beauty of this tale's protagonist is also the title of the first modern Egyptian novel written in native vernacular. Crafted in 1910 by a privileged member of society and a student at the time living in Paris, Mohammed Hussein Haikal later rose through the ranks of Egyptian politics and media. The writer, journalist and politician also holds a number of written works to his name, including The House of Revelation (1939) and Thus was I Created (1955). Haikal successfully humanises and contextualises Egypt's societal issues without too reproachful a voice. As the great poet, Ahmed Fouad Negm said, 'it is better to wake your child up through laughter, rather than shouting at him'. Haikal expresses his sympathies with the fellah of Egypt, who despite the apparent reverence with which they are looked upon by society are still obliged to bear extreme difficulties, which they do so with great dignity. Their suffering remains unchallenged as they are routinely exploited by their employers, the state, 'religious leaders' and cheated out of education which results in the demise of their mental and physical wellbeing. Illnesses may be treated as a metaphysical phenomenon, rather than with a trip to the doctor, whilst depression is treated as a headache. Zainab, a hardworking farmer girl, is to be married to a son of the landowner despite her love for another named Ibrahim. Haikal is highly critical of this traditional marriage practice, where young men and women are picked off by families and pushed together into marriage to suit the requirements of the parents over the needs of the young couple. This message is clear throughout the book but appears most starkly in an open letter from Haikal to the public, guised as a note written by the character Hamid to his own father. Hamid states, 'To this day I consider the institution of marriage defective, on account of the conditions that are attached to it. Indeed I believe a marriage which is not based on love and does not progress with love to be contemptible.' As Haikal wrote in his room in Paris he was undoubtedly influenced by his nostalgia, describing scenes in Egypt in a way that only an Egyptian could. He is a man who has succeeded in writing for the woman, and his critiques of society are logical and empathetic. Few are painted as evil in Zainab but the writer warns that as with most of society's ills, our failures are the consequence of apathy, silence and the desire to fulfil what is expected of us through convention, culture and our own ignorance.

In retaliation Loribeth throws the iron onto the child from an upstairs window, packs the damaged body into a suitcase and sets off on her travels. Thus starts Steinbeck's unusual, poetic novella about a young woman's transition from childhood to adulthood.

Book The Clash of Images

Download or read book The Clash of Images written by Abdelfattah Kilito and published by Darf Publishers Ltd.. This book was released on 2018-04-02 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Clash of Images is a sweet, Borgesian mix of bildungsroman memoir, family history, short-story collection, fable, and literary criticism. Written in a graceful and charming style, Kilito’s story takes place in an unnamed coastal city of memories where a child experiences first-hand the cultural clash of text and image in a changing, modern society. It is a time when the old Arabic world of texts and oral traditions is making way for something new: the era of the image, the comic book, photo IDs, and the cinema. The stories form a kaleidoscopic memoir of growing up in two worlds, a brilliant mixture of cultural and family history. Here are tales of first kisses and first reads, Tintin and the Prophet Muhammad, fantasies of the Wild West, the inferno of the bathhouse, and the lost paradises of childhood. The Clash of Images is a celebration of the pleasures of storytelling, a magic lantern that delicately reveals how the world of books intimately connects with the world outside their pages.
