Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With their intuitive graphical approach and expressive analysis techniques, Petri nets are suitable for a wide range of applications and teaching scenarios, and they have gained wide acceptance as a modeling technique in areas such as software design and control engineering. The core theoretical principles have been studied for many decades and there is now a comprehensive research literature that complements the extensive implementation experience. In this book the author presents a clear, thorough introduction to the essentials of Petri nets. He explains the core modeling techniques and analysis methods and he illustrates their usefulness with examples and case studies. Part I describes how to use Petri nets for modeling; all concepts are explained with the help of examples, starting with a generic, powerful model which is also intuitive and realistic. Part II covers the essential analysis methods that are specific to Petri nets, introducing techniques used to formulate key properties of system nets and algorithms for proving their validity. Part III presents case studies, each introducing new concepts, properties and analysis techniques required for very different modeling tasks. The author offers different paths among the chapters and sections: the elementary strand for readers who wish to study only elementary nets; the modeling strand for those who wish to study the modeling but not the analysis of systems; and finally the elementary models of the modeling strand for those interested in technically simple, but challenging examples and case studies. The author achieves an excellent balance between consistency, comprehensibility and correctness in a book of distinctive design. Among its characteristics, formal arguments are reduced to a minimum in the main text with many of the theoretical formalisms moved to an appendix, the explanations are supported throughout with fully integrated graphical illustrations, and each chapter ends with exercises and recommendations for further reading. The book is suitable for students of computer science and related subjects such as engineering, and for a broad range of researchers and practitioners.

Download or read book Game Theory written by Andrew McEachern and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2017-06-15 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a formalization of collected notes from an introductory game theory course taught at Queen's University. The course introduced traditional game theory and its formal analysis, but also moved to more modern approaches to game theory, providing a broad introduction to the current state of the discipline. Classical games, like the Prisoner's Dilemma and the Lady and the Tiger, are joined by a procedure for transforming mathematical games into card games. Included is an introduction and brief investigation into mathematical games, including combinatorial games such as Nim. The text examines techniques for creating tournaments, of the sort used in sports, and demonstrates how to obtain tournaments that are as fair as possible with regards to playing on courts. The tournaments are tested as in-class learning events, providing a novel curriculum item. Example tournaments are provided at the end of the book for instructors interested in running a tournament in their own classroom. The book is appropriate as a text or companion text for a one-semester course introducing the theory of games or for students who wish to get a sense of the scope and techniques of the field.

Book The Berge Equilibrium A Game Theoretic Framework for the Golden Rule of Ethics

Download or read book The Berge Equilibrium A Game Theoretic Framework for the Golden Rule of Ethics written by Mindia E. Salukvadze and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-18 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this book is to elaborate on the main principles of the theory of the Berge equilibrium by answering the following two questions: What are the basic properties of the Berge equilibrium? Does the Berge equilibrium exist, and how can it be calculated? The Golden Rule of ethics, which appears in Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Confucianism and other world religions, states the following: “Behave towards others as you would like them to behave towards you." In any game, each party of conflict seeks to maximize some payoff. Therefore, for each player, the Golden Rule is implemented through the maximization of his/her payoff by all other players, which matches well with the concept of the Berge equilibrium. The approach presented here will be of particular interest to researchers (including undergraduates and graduates) and economists focused on decision-making under complex conflict conditions. The peaceful resolution of conflicts is the cornerstone of the approach: as a matter of fact, the Golden Rule precludes military clashes and violence. In turn, the new approach requires new methods; in particular, the existence problems are reduced to saddle point design for the Germeier convolution of payoff functions, with further transition to mixed strategies in accordance with the standard procedure employed by E. Borel, J. von Neumann, J. Nash, and their followers. Moreover, this new approach has proven to be efficient and fruitful with regard to a range of other important problems in mathematical game theory, which are considered in the Appendix.
