However, in 1955 the Modernisation Plan was issued that showed that steam traction was doomed. By 1960/61 the Beeching Report was starting to have a major effect on the steam fleet and some major and well-liked classes disappeared entirely. Book The Last Days of Steam on the Eastern Region

Download or read book The Last Days of Steam on the Eastern Region written by E. H. Sawford and published by Alan Sutton Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, Eric Sawford uses a selection of photographs to tell the story of the last days of steam power on the Eastern Region. His pictures show that, while steam locomotives were not withdrawn from the Eastern Region until the mid 1960s, the 1950s was their swan song. The author's photographs document the range of motive power that could be seen on the track in that era. Locomotives are depicted in action and at rest, on the express routes, shunting or being repaired. Also recorded are neglected locomotives during their declining years, when they were used on secondary duties or were laid up before being scrapped.

Book Last Days of Steam Western and Southern

Download or read book Last Days of Steam Western and Southern written by Tony Butcher and published by . This book was released on 2014-09-22 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1955, the Modernisation Plan had just been issued which showed that steam traction's future was doomed. In the Southern Region many old classes had kept working due to the Second World War and the subsequent austerity period. No the SR 4-4-0 classes gradually disappeared, hastened by the 1961 electrification of the Kent lines. The Western Region had a more balanced engine set of 4-6-0s and tank engines, but was to see steam finish earlier. In this book, Tony Butcher's black and white images portray the poetry and the power of these living machines.

Book Riding Yorkshire s Final Steam Trains

Download or read book Riding Yorkshire s Final Steam Trains written by Keith Widdowson and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2015-02-02 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Keith Widdowson visited the North Eastern Region of British Railways on over forty occasions during the final eighteen months of steam powered passenger services. With the odd exceptions (usually for railtours) most of the locomotives were neglected, run down, filthy, prone to failure and often only kept their wheels turning courtesy of the skills of the crew coaxing them along with loving care. Far from the scenic delights so often justifiably portrayed of the Yorkshire countryside, the ever-dwindling numbers became corralled within the industrialized heartland of Bradford, Leeds, Wakefield and Normanton. Here, Widdowson recalls that bygone era, leading an almost nomadic nocturnal existence on his self-imposed "mission" of stalking the endangered "Iron Horses" in one of their final habitats. He was often far from alone in his quest. The "Haulage-bashing" fraternity comprised of like-minded enthusiasts from throughout Britain, often congregated, lemming like, on the one-coach early morning mail trains, the Summer Saturday holidaymaker trains or the Bradford portions; indeed any passenger service with a steam locomotive at its front From the many disappointments of thwarted possibilities to the euphoric joy of unexpected catches, together with over 130 contemporary images, Riding Yorkshire's Final Steam Trains is a compelling snapshot of the race against time at the end of the golden age of steam.

Book The Best of the Last Days of Steam

Download or read book The Best of the Last Days of Steam written by Colin Gordon Maggs and published by Motorbooks International. This book was released on 1993 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its heyday, the variety of steam on Britain's railways was unrivalled - from thundering express trains to hard-working tank engines - and it offered a tremendous range of possibilities for the enthusiastic steam photographer. The Best of The Last Days of Steam brings together the pick of this wealth of images captured during the 1950s and early 1960s, the last years when 'railways' still meant 'steam'. Famous companies and engines are represented alongside small branch services and behind-the-scenes views of locomotive sheds. The photographs are reproduced in high quality duotone and accompanied by informative captions conveying something of the feeling and atmosphere of those heady days. Often the backdrops and glimpses of railway life are almost as interesting as the locomotives themselves, ranging from country stations to busy London terminii and from isolated mountain routes to intricate urban junctions - all of this is captured on film. The result is a superb and evocative collection of well over a hundred photographs, drawn from all over the British Isles, providing a marvellous wide-ranging record of an era now gone and lost for ever. It will be of interest to all railway enthusiasts and to everyone who retains a nostalgia for the last days of steam.

Book The Golden Age of Yorkshire Steam and Beyond

Download or read book The Golden Age of Yorkshire Steam and Beyond written by Peter Hadfield and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2021-01-18 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seven friends recall the days when steam power was king in Yorkshire, England. The Golden Age of Yorkshire Steam and Beyond includes a wealth of unique memories and experiences from a collection of railway enthusiasts, who in their youth were fascinated by the steam locomotives that ruled the rails. Discover what it was like growing up in York and experiencing the sights and sounds of the giants of the former LNER system, including A4s, A3s, A2s, A1s and V2s, along with the Jubilees, the Royal Scots, and Black Fives of the former LMS system and the BR Standards. Explore life on the footplate of the engines allocated to Royston shed, right up to the end of steam. Read about the push and pull service that ran from Cudworth - Barnsley - Cudworth across the iconic Oaks Viaduct, as well as the Barnsley - Doncaster and York - Doncaster - Darlington journeys. Memories of Leeds, Normanton, Doncaster, Wath and Penistone are also included, in addition to shed layout drawings of Royston, Doncaster and York. Providing a fascinating insight into a railway system now long gone, the book is designed to ignite the memories of anyone who enjoyed the thrill of trainspotting during the 1950s and early 1960s, when steam was still king, before the rapid introduction of diesel and electric traction led to the complete elimination of steam from the rail network in 1968, with the exception of Flying Scotsman. The 1970s saw the return of steam on the mainline with steam specials powered by preserved locomotives. “All the authors have grown up with the sights and sounds of London North Eastern Region (LNER) giants, the former London, Midland Scottish (LMS) system and the British Railways Standard locomotives. The book will surely ignite the memories of anyone who enjoyed the thrill of trainspotting during the aforementioned years. The introduction of diesel and electric traction during 1968 led to the complete elimination of steam locomotives apart from those now preserved.” —Doncaster Family History Society
