Book Laser Weapons in Space A Critical Assessment

Download or read book Laser Weapons in Space A Critical Assessment written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the DOD pursuing the correct investment strategy for space-based high-energy lasers? Recent advances in lasers, optics, and spacecraft technologies may bring high-energy laser weapons to a sufficient level of maturity for serious consideration as space weapons against the theater ballistic missile threat. An important question is how these dramatic technology improvements have affected the strategic employment concepts for high-energy laser weapons. This study presents a comparison of competing space-based architectures given the progress made with high-energy lasers, large optics, and atmosphere compensation techniques within the past several years. Since the current Airborne Laser program utilizes only airborne assets, it is not part of this study. Three space-based architectures are evaluated against the ballistic missile threat: space-based lasers, ground-based lasers in conjunction with orbiting mirrors, and a combined approach using space-based lasers with orbiting mirrors. The evaluation criteria include the technology risks and the estimated development and deployment costs. Also, technology development programs are described for each of the architectures to address the high-risk areas. The results of this study suggest that the most technically sound and cost efficient architecture is space-based lasers with orbiting mirrors because this approach reduces the total weight and therefore cost on-orbit as well as the overall technical risks.

Book Laser Weapons In Space

Download or read book Laser Weapons In Space written by Keith B. Payne and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-04 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive examination of the issues surrounding the potential development by the United States of a space-based laser weapons program. The authors assess the implications of arms control agreements for a satellite-based laser program, including discussions of recent Soviet space-related arms control initiatives and the forthcoming ABM treaty review. They outline likely Soviet responses to a U.S. space-based laser system, address criticisms of the proposed program, and consider its future in light of developments in U.S. defense strategy and doctrine.

Book excerpt: This overview aims to inform the public discussion of space-based weapons by examining their characteristics, potential attributes, limitations, legality, and utility. The authors do not argue for or against space weapons, nor do they estimate the potential costs and performance of specific programs, but instead sort through the realities and myths surrounding space weapons in order to ensure that debates and discussions are based on fact.

Book Weaponisation of Space An Inevitable Reality and Plausible Fallout

Download or read book Weaponisation of Space An Inevitable Reality and Plausible Fallout written by Group Captain PA Patil and published by KW Publishers Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2017-01-15 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Militarily, use of spacebased assets, when integrated with operations, assumes importance as one of the many force multipliers. As on date, outer space is being extensively used by the armed forces for varied services which include navigation, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, environmental monitoring and advance warning. The command and control in today’s netcentric environment also depends on space resources. Thus, the use of outer space with spacebased assets in support of military operations leads to the deduction that space as a medium stands militarised. Of late, many of the dominant nations have developed, or are expanding, capabilities to attack the spacebased assets of potential adversaries to disrupt command and control structures. Countries like the US and China are contesting for space supremacy and working towards developing spacebased weapons capable of being delivered from spacebased platforms. These developments, in turn, are infusing a sense of insecurity amongst other international players, including India, and have raised concerns worldwide. Development of spacebased weapons by any state has the potential to ignite a new arms race in space as many countries now possess the wherewithal for launching spacebased assets capable of carrying the required payloads. Thus, from the present capability of ‘militarisation of space’, we seem to be graduating towards ‘weaponisation of space’. As outer space has been designated as one of the ‘global’ commons, any sort of deployment or employment of space weapons raises concerns and any use of spacebased weapons will have unpleasant cascading effects. In the absence of any international curb or law on space weaponisation, it continues to be a conceptual possibility as well as an empirical reality.

Book excerpt: A clear and lively account of the space-weapons issue. The authors examine all aspects of the Strategic Defense Initiative proposal its historical background, current and forthcoming technologies, and international political implications. The book is divided into three main sections. The first part describes the historical development of space-weapons technology from the 1920s to the present day. The second part provides a detailed technical assessment of the anti-missile systems being pursued as part of the Strategic Defense Initiative. It also considers the countermeasures to SDI that are currently in existence or are being developed by the United States and the Soviet Union. The third part examines the international political and strategic implications of SDI and their probable consequences for arms-control policies.

Book War at the Speed of Light

Download or read book War at the Speed of Light written by Louis A. Del Monte and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2021-03 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War at the Speed of Light describes the revolutionary and ever-increasing role of directed-energy weapons (such as laser, microwave, electromagnetic pulse, and cyberspace weapons) in warfare. Louis A. Del Monte delineates the threat that such weapons pose to disrupting the doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction, which has kept the major powers of the world from engaging in nuclear warfare. Potential U.S. adversaries, such as China and Russia, are developing hypersonic missiles and using swarming tactics as a means to defeat the U.S. military. In response, the U.S. Department of Defense established the 2018 National Security Strategy, emphasizing directed-energy weapons, which project devastation at the speed of light and are capable of destroying hypersonic missiles and enemy drones and missile swarms. Del Monte analyzes how modern warfare is changing in three fundamental ways: the pace of war is quickening, the rate at which weapons project devastation is reaching the speed of light, and cyberspace is now officially a battlefield. In this acceleration of combat called "hyperwar," Del Monte shows how disturbingly close the world is to losing any deterrence to nuclear warfare.

Book excerpt: Terrorists continue to enhance their technical sophistication in constructing weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) with devastating effects. Chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive (CBRNE) weapons now pose a greater threat than ever before. Emphasizing basic chemistry and biology, including microbiology and human health, Terrorism and WMDs: Awareness and Response is an introductory manual on CBRNE weapons that helps prepare emergency response, counterterrorism, and security professionals to respond to a WMD attack quickly and effectively. Examines different threats and the best response Taking a non-technical approach to technical concepts, the book begins with an overview of the historical and ideological context of modern terrorism and CBRNE weapons. Specific CBRNE weapons are discussed, and each section provides a history of the particular type of weapon as well as details on the design, structure, properties, and behavior of the weapon. The book examines the impacts of CBRNE weapons on human health and recommends safety precautions for both emergency responders and the public. The final section of the book addresses specific responder issues, particularly the Incident Command System, as well as personal protective equipment (PPE), decontamination, and site remediation. Learning tools to aid comprehension More than 170 photos and illustrations supplement the text, questions at the end of each chapter test comprehension, and a glossary provides clear definitions to better understand complex terminology. Intended as a starting point for understanding CBRNE weapons and their grave potential for destruction, the book offers practical instruction on how to respond to intentional and accidental releases.
