Book Laser Velocimetry in Fluid Mechanics

Download or read book Laser Velocimetry in Fluid Mechanics written by Alain Boutier and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-01-09 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In fluid mechanics, velocity measurement is fundamental in order to improve the behavior knowledge of the flow. Velocity maps help us to understand the mean flow structure and its fluctuations, in order to further validate codes. Laser velocimetry is an optical technique for velocity measurements; it is based on light scattering by tiny particles assumed to follow the flow, which allows the local fluid flow velocity and its fluctuations to be determined. It is a widely used non-intrusive technique to measure velocities in fluid flows, either locally or in a map. This book presents the various techniques of laser velocimetry, as well as their specific qualities: local measurements or in plane maps, mean or instantaneous values, 3D measurements. Flow seeding with particles is described with currently used products, as well as the appropriate aerosol generators. Post-processing of data allows us to extract synthetic information from measurements and to perform comparisons with results issued from CFD codes. The principles and characteristics of the different available techniques, all based on the scattering of light by tiny particles embedded in the flow, are described in detail; showing how they deliver different information, either locally or in a map, mean values and turbulence characteristics.

Book LDA Application Methods

Download or read book LDA Application Methods written by Zhengji Zhang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-08-12 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This technical book considers the application side of LDA techniques. Starting from the basic theories that are crucial for each LDA user, the main subject of the book is focused on diverse application methods. In details, it deals with universal methodical techniques that have been mostly developed in the last 15 years. The book thus gives for the first time an application reference for LDA users in improving the optical conditions and enhancing the measurement accuracies. It also provides the guidelines for simplifying the measurements and correcting measurement errors as well as for clarifying the application limits and extending the application areas of LDA techniques. Beside the treatments of some traditional optical and flow mechanical features influencing the measurement accuracies, the book shows a broad spectrum of LDA application methods in the manner of measuring the flow turbulence, resolving the secondary flow structures, and quantifying the optical aberrations at measurements of internal flows etc.. Thus, it also supports the further developments of both the hard- and software of LDA instrumentations.

Book Applications of Laser Techniques to Fluid Mechanics

Download or read book Applications of Laser Techniques to Fluid Mechanics written by R.J. Adrian and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume consists of papers selected from the proceedings of the Fifth International Symposium on Applications of Laser Techniques to Fluid Mechanics, held at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon from 9 to 12 July, 1990. Relative to previous meetings in the Lisbon series the scope of this symposium was broadened by expanding the topical coverage to include all laser techniques used in fluid mechanics. This change recognized the trend amongst experimental fluid dynamicists to employ laser techniques for the mea surement of many different quantities, including concentration, temperature, particle size, and velocity, and the need for researchers to have a forum in which to communicate their work and share their common interests. The Fifth Symposium contained twenty-three sessions of formal presentations and a lively Open Forum ses sion. In addition, Dr. H. J. Pfeiffer organized a special Workshop on the Use of Computers in Flow Mea surements which contained five sessions on frequency domain processors, correIa tors, special detectors, and biasing.

Download or read book Particle Image Velocimetry written by Ronald J. Adrian and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particle image velocimetry, or PIV, refers to a class of methods used in experimental fluid mechanics to determine instantaneous fields of the vector velocity by measuring the displacements of numerous fine particles that accurately follow the motion of the fluid. Although the concept of measuring particle displacements is simple in essence, the factors that need to be addressed to design and implement PIV systems that achieve reliable, accurate, and fast measurements and to interpret the results are surprisingly numerous. The aim of this book is to analyze and explain them comprehensively.

Book excerpt: A Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) system and a high speed imaging system were acquired for the Department of Defense (DoD) Grant N00014-97-1-0511 and setup in the Combustion and Emission Control Laboratory at Clark Atlanta University. These instruments have provided an integrated diagnostic system in the areas of combustion, propulsion, emission control, chemical kinetics and fluid dynamics for time resolved flow visualization and detailed quantitative measurements of flow velocities in complex reacting and non-reacting flows. Research projects supported with the acquired instruments included: turbulent premixed combustion, optimization of non-thermal plasma discharge for pollution control, droplet behavior under supercritical conditions, interaction between acoustic waves and fuel droplets and sprays, and combustion instabilities in ramjet combustors. The instruments will also be used on the precombustion pyrolytic degradation of hydrocarbon fuels under normal and microgravity conditions. Seven (7) undergraduate and graduate students from the Department of Engineering and Department of Chemistry at Clark Atlanta University have, so far, been trained and educated on the instruments. The acquired instrumentation has significantly strengthened the University's research infrastructure, and enhanced CAU's capabilities to undertake research that is relevant to the critical technology areas of DoD. These include the chemical kinetics, combustion and propulsion, and fluid dynamics programs of the Army Research Lab (ARL); the aerodynamics, turbulence and internal flows, air-breathing combustion, space power and propulsion, and physical mathematics and applied analysis programs of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR); and the turbulence, propulsion and flow structure interactions, and propulsion programs of the Office of Naval Research (ONR).

Book Laser Velocimeter and Total Pressure Measurements in Circular To Rectangular Transition Ducts

Download or read book Laser Velocimeter and Total Pressure Measurements in Circular To Rectangular Transition Ducts written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-18 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive set of total pressure and three-component laser velocimetry (LV) data were obtained within two circular-to-rectangular transition ducts at low subsonic speeds. This set of reference data was acquired for use in identifying secondary flow mechanisms and for assessing the accuracy of computational procedures for calculating such flows. Data were obtained at the inlet and exit planes of an aspect ratio three duct having a length-to-diameter ratio of one (AR310) and an aspect ratio six duct having a length-to-diameter ratio of three (AR630). Each duct was unseparated throughout its transition section. It is therefore concluded that secondary flows can play an important part in the fluid dynamics of transition ducts and needs to be addressed in computational analysis. The strength of the secondary flows depends on both the aspect ratio and relative axial duct length. Patrick, William P. and Mccormick, Duane C.
