Book excerpt: (1) CF Chemistry: Radiative lifetimes of the carbon fluoride ion has been measured, with values of 26.7 and 26. Ins obtained respectively. This is the first time that such direct measurements have been reported, and the work is now being prepared for submission to Chemical Physics Letters. (2) O + CF and O + CF2 reactions: Interferograms of IR emission accompanying the O + CF2 reaction have been recorded as a function of time, and thus the complete two dimensional (time and wavelength) mapping of the products of the reaction have been emerged. Figure 1 shows a time history of the complete IR emission (all wavelengths) following the photolysis of CF2HCl (to produce CF2 radicals) in a flow of atomic oxygen.

Book excerpt: A series of measurements on free radicals produced by chemical reaction and photodissociation has been made, using laser methods for formation and in some cases, detection. Highly exothermic reactions between oxygen atoms and both CF2 and CHF radicals have been studied by time resolved Fourier transform infrared emission spectroscopy, yielding information on the reaction pathway, emitting products, kinetics of formation and quenching, and the nascent vibrational distributions. Emitting species hydrogen chloride, hydrogen fluoride, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide have been identified in these systems. In a second study, the quantum state distributions and polarisations of OH and OD(A2sigma+) products of the two photon dissociation of H2O and D2O at 266 nm have been measured. Results show the importance of long lived trajectories in determining the photodissociation dynamics, but the unexpected observation of low fragment alignment is unable to clarify the two photon state responsible for the excitation step. A third project has concentrated on measurements of radiative lifetimes of the CF(A2 sigma +) state, with new information on the A-X spectroscopy and on the O + CF(X2II) reaction rate constant found. Finally, preliminary measurements on the nascent CO rational distribution in the O + CS reaction is reported, and some additional experiments concerning the formation of carbene radicals in liquid phase enzyme cleavage studies are described. Carbon difluoride, Water, Deuterium. (MJM).

Book excerpt: CF has been detected using frequency doubled dye laser radiation (rather than the Raman shifted dye laser radiation reported previously). Radiative lifetime studies have not yet been completed; pulsed production methods of CF have been used to show that conditions can be found under which it will be possible to measure reaction kinetics of the CF + O bimolecular reaction. The pulsed Fourier transform infrared emission spectrometer is now complete and is undergoing tests. A dedicated fast transient digitiser is being built and the interface to a micrometer is complete: this will enable us to take time resolved interferograms of the emission and transform these to obtain time resolved spectra of the ir active components. A graduate student is working full time on this project.

Book Reactions of Hydroxyl Radicals with Oxygenated Hydrocarbons in the Gas Phase A Laser Photolysis Laser Induced Fluorescence Study

Download or read book Reactions of Hydroxyl Radicals with Oxygenated Hydrocarbons in the Gas Phase A Laser Photolysis Laser Induced Fluorescence Study written by Cornelie Bänsch and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2017 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydroxyl radicals (OH) play a key role in ignition processes and in the atmosphere. Thus, the detailed knowledge of the kinetics of OH reactions is crucial in combustion and atmospheric research. In this work, an experimental approach for time-resolved studies of OH radical reactions at high pressures with pulsed laser photolysis/laser-induced fluorescence was revised and the reactions of dimethyl ether, diethyl ether, and dimethoxymethane with OH radicals were investigated in detail. The results reveal a deeper insight into the reaction processes of ether compounds with OH in general, contributing to a better understanding of the combustion of different biofuels and fuel additives.

Book Laser Flash Photolysis Studies of Some Gas Phase Reactions of Atmospheric Interest

Download or read book Laser Flash Photolysis Studies of Some Gas Phase Reactions of Atmospheric Interest written by Zhijun Zhao and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radical reactions play central roles in regulating regional air quality and global climate. Some potentially important gas phase radical reactions are being investigated in this research project, including Cl reactions with acetone, butanone, 3-pentanone, pyridine, and dimethyl selenide (DMSe), HO2 complex formation and dissociation with formic and acetic acids, and reactive and non-reactive quenching of O(1D) by the potent greenhouse gases SO2F2, NF3, and SF5CF3. The involved radicals are generated by laser flash photolysis (LFP). Temporal profiles of either the radical reactant or a product are monitored in "real time" using atomic resonance fluorescence spectroscopy (RF), time-resolved UV-visible absorption spectroscopy (TRUVVAS), or tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS), allowing kinetic and mechanistic information of these reactions to be obtained. These studies provide new knowledge of the investigated radical reactions and facilitate a better understanding of their significance in atmospheric chemistry.

Book Reactive Intermediates in the Gas Phase

Download or read book Reactive Intermediates in the Gas Phase written by D. W. Setser and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reactive Intermediates in the Gas Phase: Generation and Monitoring covers methods for reactive intermediates in the gas phase. The book discusses the generation and measurement of atom and radical concentrations in flow systems; the high temperature flow tubes, generation and measurement of refractory species; and the electronically excited long-lived states of atoms and diatomic molecules in flow systems. The text also describes the production and detection of reactive species with lasers in static systems; the production of small positive ions in a mass spectrometer; and the discharge-excited rare gas halide lasers. Chemists, physicists, and people working in aerochem laboratories will find the book invaluable.

Book Laser Induced Kinetics An Experimental and Theoretical Program

Download or read book Laser Induced Kinetics An Experimental and Theoretical Program written by N. Selamoglu and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thhe kinetics of CF3 and CH3 radical reactions have been investigated using the VLPO method. The reactions of interest were radical recombination and metathetical halogenation (Br2, Cl2). In addition to yielding gas-phase reaction rates, these studies pointed out the importance fo gas-surface interactions in the chemistry. The VPLO technique was also used to investigate a radical-surface reaction: the reaction of the CF3 radicals on a silicon oxide surface. The latter study revealed that H2O on the surface plays a major role in the chemistry. The surface reaction was studied as functions of surface temperature (320-530 K) and CF3 concentration. Keywords: Very low-pressure pyrolysis; Laser induced kinetics; Radical surface chemistry; Chlorine; Bromine; Fluorine; and Methane.

Book Kinetic Studies of Gas Phase Free Radicals

Download or read book Kinetic Studies of Gas Phase Free Radicals written by Curt Wittig and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detailed studies of elementary unimolecular and bimolecular gas phase processes were carried out using the time-resolved techniques of laser photolysis and laser induced fluorescence. Bimolecular reactions of diatomic and triatomic carbon and the ethynyl radical with small polyatomic molecules were investigated, and rate coefficients and energy disposal into product degrees of freedom were determined. The study of unimolecular reactions induced by multiple photon excitation concentrated on simple bond fission reactions. Nascent rovibronic state distributions in the dissociation products of trifluoroacetonitrile were determined as a function of laser fluence and intensity. The rate of the unimolecular reaction of 2-methyl-2-nitrosopropane was measured following dye laser excitation, and found to be faster than the rate deduced from thermal activation experiments.
